X2N-7 or Evo 7 for closest to EMG sound?

Alright, so when I DO upgrade pickups in my rg7421xl, I think i'm pretty decided on an Air Norton for the neck...and no matter what I do, I just like the sound of EMG's in the bridge for heavy distortion. I e-mailed Dimarzio to ask whether the X2N-7 or Evo 7 would be closer to replicating the sound of an EMG, and they said the Evo would be better suited. My question to you guys is: which pickup do you feel would be better suited for the EMG-esque tone I'm after, and/or which pickup would you recommend? I need a pickup that excels at high gain, tight palm mutes, and has good pinch/artificial harmonics

Fuck it, you only live once!

You know, a lot of people say the Evo is very much like an EMG81. I don't see it myself, I find the Evo a lot clearer, more defined and articulate, but yeah definetly go for the Evo.

well, i compared the X2N in my Rhoads V to an 81/85 combo, and the 81 sounded similar to the X2N, it was just lacking a lot of color, it was really sterile, the x2n sounded far more natural, and just more colorful, the 81 was bland by comparison... was through an engl fireball, didn't change anything besides which guitar i was using, i thoroughly enjoyed the x2n more... even liked the dimebucker compared to it... i'd go with the x2n-7 if i were you, i'm going to be in the near future...

if you want to hear my x2n, go listen to my myspace, http://www.myspace.com/AdamBath november 16th riff and pestilition hammence are on the Rhoads, and it just wails.

That post is making me second think the EMG 81-7. A while back I said I liked the Blaze better than the X2N, I don't know what I was thinking. I really like the X2N so much better. It's just so much cleaner and more powerful. I'd like an X2N 7, but I'm not sure how well the Low B will sound.

i've tuned my Rhoads down to a low B, and it was very very very tight sounding, the x2n was just incredible. it should have been a 7 string pickup from the getgo. its so well balanced, tight, and crunchy, everything i'm looking for in a pickup. i'd go with the x2n-7 before the 81-7 for 2 reasons, no battery, and you aren't stuck with emg's or rediculously large pickup rings.

What are the upsides of having the 81-7?

A while ago I tuned my mahogany RG w/x2n to B and it wasn't exactly tight I remember. But back then I was running with a Metal zone not a mesa though.

the upsides? itd sound like emgs? i dunno if thats an upside lol... the x2n in mahogony isn't very tight, i didn't like it in my Washburn EC-29, which was a mahogony body with maple neck through... it sounds much better in alder, and i'd imagine basswood... and i'm soon to find out how it sounds in ash...

I think I'm gonna wait for some reviews on the X2N to see if it has a different tonality than the 6 version till I make any desicions.

i've read that they added a little more low end oomph to the pickup, but i've not seen any actual reviews...

That's a good thing for the X2N, since it doesn't have much bass. It's a good pickup for band work.
