Drew's adventures with a soldering iron pt 2.
So, my UV7PWH came to me without the high pass capacitator that comes on most Ibanez guitars wired on, and while I did miss the brighter tones you get as you roll back the volume, I also found I really dug the tones you got without it, especially for bluesier stuff. What to do? Naturally, wire yur guitar up with a push-pull high pass filter a la the Ibanez JS series (as an aside, that guitar has the most versatile switching scheme I've ever played - strongly recommended mod for any H-H guitar, and I kinda want to pick up a 7620 to do that to).
So, I get all the parts together, and get to work, stopping first to do a fretboard clean and fret polish (and Eric's Guitars' fretboard oil rocks - first time I've tried it, and my fretboard looks and feels dead sexy now). Two hours and a sorely needed gin and tonic later, everything's wired up. I go upstairs and plug her in - I THINK the high pass filter's working, but I can't tell because I've somehow fucked up my grounding and it gets worse as the volume goes back. I'm making progress, though - the last time I tried a DIY wiring job on a guitar (7620 to three way/push pull coil tap) I got as far as disconnecting everything and burning myself before I realized I was in over my head. This time, I got everything hooked up almost correctly and burned myself before I realized I was in over my head. ![]() So, into the shop tomorrow - there's a great luthier/tech with a shop like 2 blocks for him, so I'm going to cut out of work early and pay him a visit. Oh well... I pulled out my "Surfing" tab book and got some unplugged practice in anyway, since the UV still played damned good... ![]()

doh! you'll get it next time.
and, what's this neato H-H config you speak of? i've been wanting to get a super-switch for my RG7621, to do a B-series/B-parallel/some B-N combo in parallel/N-parallel/N-series. something like that, but with a coil-tap?
I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate. We'll cross the streams. |

Cool that your making progress as I would not know what to do when it comes to wiring although I could get it if I wasn't so lazy...lol.
Surfing and the PWH.....good combo. ![]() By the way, you should've kept the 7620 but oh well.... |

Leon, it's basically the control scheme from a JS100, although if I was to redo it I'd do the 1000 because I've decided I DO like having the option of the high pass filter being disengaged. It's just a three way blade (a tele-style works in a pinch) wired up so with the coil tap in you get neck hum, both in parallel, and bridge hum, but when you pull it you get neck single, both out of phase, bridge single.
it's a personal thing but i think a coil tapped humbucker kills the sound of a parallel humbucker, and with that setup you've basically got six tones at your disposal, all quite useable. Shawn, at the time I needed a bass more than another seven. ![]() |
