Problem with 2 new Dimarzios...

Hey guys,

Upon recommendation from the members of this forum, I went ahead and purchased the Dimarzio Air Norton and Blaze Bridge for my Cort Viva 7-string.
I had them installed by my usual tech, the same guy I had put in my pickups in my 6-string Ibanez.

The first thing I noticed when I started playing with the new pups was that compared to my 6-string, it has less distortion. The sound is much clearer than the the stock pups, but there is a definite loss in distortion compared to my other guitar, which also has an air norton in the neck. I A/Bed both over a few days and with 2 different amps, (just to make sure I wasn't crazy) and came to the same result over and over: there is less distortion when I plug my 7 string in then when I plug in my Ibanez. With the volume on my guitar on 10, it makes it sound like my full amount of distortion is like a mild overdrive.

Also, the sound is very thin, and there's no "chunk" to the bottom end, like very little bass whatsoever. There is no richness to the sound like my other guitar. It just doesn't sound right. This isn't what I would expect when putting in new pickups. I feel like I'm not getting everything they have, if that makes sense.

Do you guys have any idea why this might be? If you need pictures of wiring, or of the guitar, let me know.

If you guys could help me out in any way, it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Mike

They are most likely wired up wrong.

hmm... what were the stock pickups?

a picture of the wiring wouldn't hurt

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
We'll cross the streams.

That, and the setup is EVERYTHING (IMO). If the strings are way high and the pickups real low...the tone will be flubby and the gain will be weak. Try adjusting pickup height and the action (unless it's alright).

If that doesn't work, it may be wired wrong as stated above.

Not to mention picking technique (don't worry, no bashing here).

my blaze bridge in my universe sounded like crap until i rewired it in serial... i hated the sound of it in parallel, very weak... i still don't prefer its scooped mids tone though...

What's the difference between serial and parallel wiring?

Hint, poke, workbench, poke, hint

serial gives hotter output than parallel... there might be slight differences but thats the main one... this is the best way i can explain serial and parallel from a wiring point of view... my l33t pbrush skills... pretend the light bulbs are coils and thats what it means with pickups...

^ HAHA!! Series has a fuller more humbucker sound, since that's usually how humbuckers are wired. Parallel is more of a single coil with hum cancelling sound. I have Ibanez 7321's and a 7621 which all have the "special" 5-way switch. Positions 1,3,5 are all series and 2 and 4 are parallel. I use 2,4 for clean tones and the rest for my gainy stuff.
