Fluttering Problems.

So I recently got an rg350 and I set it up so the trem flutters amazingly and ive been trying to get the same results with my rg1527 but so far every time I try all I get is a rattle from the trem arm. Does anyone have any tips on how I can get my 7 to flutter well? Would just tightening up the bar work?

Any help would be appreciated?

James,

You can't really tighten the trem arm on a EdgePro except by putting on more bushings. They're the white rings on the part that gets inserted into the trem itself. If you have two already in there then there is not much you could do. Maybe a thin bit of sticky tape wrapped around it or I've heard that clear nail varnish works quite well too.

What exactly is "flutter"? Is it a technique? How do you do it?

You just sort of swat the end of the bar after playing a note. Make sure the bar is parallel to the strings, facing either towards the headstock or away from it or it won't work obviously. Satch and Vai do loads of these, they do sound awesome.

Well, it's either your bushings are worn, or the arm holder itself is loose. Most likely it's the former - a bit of teflon tape around the inside, or popping off the bushigs and coating the inside with nail polish and then putting them back on is the way to go.

However, if you're actually hearing rattling, that almost makes me wonder if the arm holder is loose. Take off the back of the trem cover, and see if the bit that the bar pops into has any play in it. If so, a socket wrench and, probably, a flat head screwdriver on the front is the way to go, though be careful with that screwdriver so it doesn't slip and gouge up the guitar.

That's the Borland method.

I'm not sure how Satch does it because I can't remember hearing him do it much but I know that Vai puts the whammy bar pointing directly away from the headstock and thumps the body of his guitar with the side of his fist. Listen to the outro of "Blue Powder" to see what I mean.

And before anyone explodes with indignation, I'm sure Vai uses what I dubbed the "Borland Method" earlier aswell.

Um, Vai mostly does it by flicking the bar, too. I'm sure, considering the amount of other overtones that would generate, that's just a bit of live showmanship on his part.

It works for me and I've seen several other people do it too.

In physical terms there is no way he could keep the gargle going in the Blue Powder outro without that. He does it in a few other songs too including on the Whitesnake album he played on. I've mostly seen him do any significant gargles on the body of the guitar.
