![]() | 9 string question Hey all I'm currently working on a custom 9 string guitar, and I'm going to fabricate my own humbucker for it. I've built single coil and humbucking pickups in the past, so I do actually know what I'm doing. The problem I have is where does one find a magnet long enough to run the full length of an extended range pickup, or would it be possible to use single coil type construction and use individual magnets for each pole piece, and just flip the polarity for one of the coils. Has anyone made this type of 'bucker, and if so, does it work ok, or does it sound like ass? Any and all input, advice, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Eric. |

You want plenty of steel in there to raise the inductance which will lower the resonance and raise the output. I use 1" and 0.5" long magnets placed end to end to get the various lengths I need for long pickups. More info here! |

![]() | Thanks Dan, that's what I figured, just thought it best to be sure. I'm glad to see that you don't neccessarily have to have a one piece magnet, that simplifies things. And dude, your guitars are absolutely the shit! Freaking amazing! The stuff I've posted here has gotten good reviews, but certainly nothing like the kudos you so deservedly get. I hope my 9 meets the ridiculously high standards you set when it's finished. Wish me luck, Eric. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Aw, shucks ![]() The mags want to repel each other when placed end to end like that so it can help to tack them in place with a drop of CA during assembly. I'd also recommend the coil is held between two solid pieces during winding if you're using flatwork that has any kind of flexibility. This will help prevent the ends flaring out. Good luck to you, Eric. The trekkie hollowbody you did looked sweet IIRC. What else is in the works there? |
