Chain straps

i've been intent on using a chain strap ever since my mother bought me 'origin of feces' by type o negative when i was 14 years old. seeing the shot of pete steele with his just blew me away, and subsequent pictures continued to inspire me, such as:

i finally got round to making one for myself last year. it was meant to be in preparation for worms of sabnock, but i wound up using syan's bass (from interlock); a warwick with straplocks on.

it's a metal chain i bought from robert dyas (UK ironmongers) and the fitting to allow the leather strap surround was fixed on with cable ties. this was obviously a temporary idea, it looks untidy and slips easily to awkward angles.

i do quite want to go back to using a chain strap, but the problems are:

- discomfort if it's metal (plastic chain maybe?)

- strap surround fitting

- the strap itself slips easily around the shoulder

anyone feel like being a genius with advice?

Two separate pieces of chain at either end with a bit of comfortable strappiness in between?

Think of it this way:

[strap-hole]-[chain]-[strap]-[chain]-[strap-hole]

Dammit they stole my idea! But what I was thinking of was a bit longer in the chain department.

yeah, that's sort of my complaint with what i've seen there.

thinking of possibly just putting a stretch of leather beneath the chain part that would meet my shoulder.

Yup. Velcro is your friend!

And what about that special add-on pad that Jim Dunlop or someone used to make? You could just throw that on underneath it for even more comfort.

That must be damn painful with a heavy guitar! TBH that kinda strap is used 100% for the look, so IMO either go all out and put up with the discomfort of the chain, or just dont bother, and get something with partial chain (like on the website posted above).

Two reasons why a "strap" like that wouldn't work for me:

1) Heavy guitars.

2) Bony shoulders.

I was listening to Origin Of The Feces on the way to work today, your MOM bought you that? With the original cover!?

Those chain straps look painful, but I'm sure the Man O' Steele has no trouble with it.
