Muting Problem Solved! [Cheap String Dampener Content]
![]() ![]() ![]() Forgive the phone pics, but this works phenomonally well! I absolutely love how this feels. A lot of the muting methods I've tried either didn't mute well enough for me, or had a weird feel, or blocked off too many frets to be useful etc. (I play touch-style, crazy/somewhat impossible to naturally mute tapping) This uses one of those Livestrong/Lance Armstrong knock off bracelets that are cheap and are floating around these days. I doubled wrapped around the headstock, and tuner by tuner to the volute, where its crossed. (Refer to above pics). Unfortunately, you need a top mounted locking nut (or any guitar with a volute) to use this correctly, but thus far its perfect. Thoughts: -You can easily remove the top bit over the locking nut mid-song, but not as fast as a hairband. -The feel is a bit more stiff traditional playing, and there seems to be a bit more resistance to bends (but due to extra tension, touchstyle is easy). -The rubber mutes amazingly well -Having only one band on the first fret is more than enough, but you can get even more mute than I can imagine is nessacary by adding the last part of the band. Anyways, I'm really excited, its worked GREAT on hi-gain. It appears to have more resistance, but thats more likely a psychological thing i'll get over than any physical (My Tele has a much more taut and difficult to bend setup, that I'm used to. This is still easier than that). However, seeing as I'm using this for touch style as much as I can, I don't know if I'll be using this for traditional techniques anytime soon ![]() Anyhow, let me know how well this works on Ibby sevens and maybe even an RG8! |

On a non-floyd guitar, a sock works perfect for anything I have needed, and because of the material, when I slide down to do chording, I could move the cloth over the nut.

Oh yeah, I was using a shirt, a sock etc. But the problem is it didn't mute evenly or didn't mute enough. Oh well, I'm just saying I think this is one of the better muting solutions for attempting touch style on guitar. It doesn't move out of place or anything. I'm going to see what I can do with a inspirational band thing on a non-volute guitar and get similar results. The rubber REALLY helps.
