![]() ![]() | Palm sanders: sheet or Random Orbit? i'm stripping a project guitar right now and there's no way in this world i'm doing it by hand. I tried some Formby's Poly Paint Remover but it didn't really do anything at all...it could have been the temperature when i did it. anyway, i think the best thing to try might be a cheap palm sander. i was looking at these two: 1/4 Sheet Finishing Sander with Soft Storage Bag or 5" Random Orbit Sander anyone know what the differences are? i know nothing about palm sanders. thanks ![]() |

It gives you a nice smooth surface, while a palm sander leaves directional marks. Be careful, though, because a random orbital takes material away in a hurry. By comparison, a cheap electrical unit from Home Depot is going to rattle your damn hand off, will have problem staying parallel to the work surface, and often leaves sanding lines behind that require manual touch up. It is also very easy to carve divots and trenches into the material with one of these. You really do get what you pay for, but having worked for a custom furniture builder, I got used to working with the real tools. Just imagine working with one of these dual action sanders: That is what you use to carve a top out of a guitar. ![]() | |
