Palm sanders: sheet or Random Orbit?

i'm stripping a project guitar right now and there's no way in this world i'm doing it by hand. I tried some Formby's Poly Paint Remover but it didn't really do anything at all...it could have been the temperature when i did it.

anyway, i think the best thing to try might be a cheap palm sander.
i was looking at these two:

1/4 Sheet Finishing Sander with Soft Storage Bag
or
5" Random Orbit Sander

anyone know what the differences are? i know nothing about palm sanders.
thanks

Random orbital all the way. It gives you a nice smooth surface, while a palm sander leaves directional marks. Be careful, though, because a random orbital takes material away in a hurry.

Oh no, they make specific paper. It is round, sticky on one side, and often has vent holes.

Is there any real significant difference between the cheap Palm Sanders for like $20, compared to the expensive ones?

Not really, no. I've had a couple cheap palm sanders for close to 10 years now, with no hiccups.

Durability, power, and accuracy are where you see the differences at. My random orbital is an Ingersol Rand air tool, and requires at least 90psi constant air pressure. The thing is easy to control, feels like it is floating when you are working with it, and has the ability to remove material in a hurry, leaving behind a smooth, whirl-free surface. The thing cruises along at 12,000RPM, and the palm lever is pressure sensitive for velocity control.

By comparison, a cheap electrical unit from Home Depot is going to rattle your damn hand off, will have problem staying parallel to the work surface, and often leaves sanding lines behind that require manual touch up. It is also very easy to carve divots and trenches into the material with one of these.

You really do get what you pay for, but having worked for a custom furniture builder, I got used to working with the real tools. Just imagine working with one of these dual action sanders:

That is what you use to carve a top out of a guitar.
