Blackouts or Lundgrens
I'm trying to decide what to replace the Duncan Designed pups in my M-207, which is a basswood body. I have a guy that might be able to get me a sweet deal on some Lundgren M7's, and my shop is Duncan dealer so I can get those for cheaper also.
Which would be better for the basswood? Looking for a Kataklysm, Scar Symmetry sound mix. Any help is appreciated! |

Depends on whether you want actives (blackouts) of passives (lundgrens). The Lundgrens would be a lot lot more expensive, probably even with your friend getting you a deal on them.
I can get a pretty good Scar Symmetry sound with my EMG707s, but I know that Scar Symmetry uses passive pickups. |

lookin probably for a passive pickup, but I'm a big Seymour Duncan fan. But my buddies swear by active. I'm willing to try actives.
I tried one the Illustrated Luthier's 8 string woth the lundgrens and they were amazing. I'm torn! |

i don't have a whole lot of experience with the Blackouts or Lundgrens, but i have spent enough time with Duncan Designed to know that ANYTHING you replace them with will be a drastic improvement
. you have nothing to lose with either choice.also, the resale value for Blackouts and Lundgrens is pretty damn good. if you end up not liking them, you shouldn't have a problem selling either one of them. |

This is an interesting thread I think, me neither can make up my mind on which one I prefer (haven't played any of them in person).
The lundgrens description sounds amazing and I love the way passives sound organic and dynamic. But for some reason all passives (including evo 7 to some degree) I have played feel somewhat spungier than actives (if that makes any sense) and that's a characteristic I don't like to much. Does the Lundgren also have this characteristic passive spunginess (in comparison to actives)? I'm also a big fan of how clean everything sounds on actives and how balanced the sound is so every single note (and mistake) shines through. Is this something the Lundgren also has? Apparently the blackouts sound much more organic than emg's for example. Is it in passive teritory or is it still less organic than the Lundgren? What are the major differences (soundwise and outputwise) between the Lundgren and the Blackout?

I've got an M7 in basswood, and it sounds pretty damn good. Very solid & Aggressive with good clarity.

when i first saw this thread i thought to my self "are you serious? Lundgren wins hands down" but then you said the guitar is basswood. From my understanding the Lundgren Ms are very bright. and with a basswood body more bass would suit it better. So my vote is for the blackouts or even the new blackout metal(ahb-2) pickups. having a battery sux but if you want good tone and clarity and it's between one passive(around 180) or a set of actives(around 160) the actives seams to be a better choice. Me though, i hope to get some BKs soon.

your two choices in pickups can't even be put side by side. i would go the lundgren route because i'm not an active guy. I have 8 string lundgrens in basswood and they sound fine. the guitar itself is dark and the pickups really even that out.
the question you have to ask yourself is "Do i like actives more than passives" that should be the deciding factor right there. No matter what anyone says, blackouts are still active pickups. They may sound "more organic" but that just means they are active and trying to sound passive, so why not just get a really great passive. you know?

The Lundgrens are less organic sounding than the Blackouts honestly.. the only difference between the Lundgren and a EMG 81-7 is the Lundgren sounds better as you turn the volume pot down. But they are extremely bright, scooped, compressed, and punchy. I really didn't like the one I had and think the Bareknuckle Nailbomb 7 I have now absolutely destroys it.
Also, a really good deal on a set of Lundgrens is still mega expensive. I'd recommend bareknuckles over the lundgrens, but Blackouts are fantastic as well and I would think they would sound better in a basswood body.

I had an M7 in my Gryphon for a while, it slayed, but it's UBER powerful (Too powerful for me at least) but holy shit did it have clarity.
I can't speak much for the Blackouts, as I only have limited playing time with them. Have you given Bareknuckles a look? The Miracle Man would be a good choice to look into. But if I had to choose between the Lundgrens and the Blackouts, I'd take the lundgrens for the unbelieveable clarity. Wow, you really think so? Interesting.
You shake your ass but you're already dead.
