As my rig is almost perfect now, lets go for a new

the problem is: i'm a n00b @PUs. i would be grateful for some hints/opinions for a new one on the bridge. i play my 7420 with stock PUs (tuned 1 step down to A) over diezel herbert.

well, what do i want to change? good question. i'm not really good at describing but after testing other guitars i know that the stock one does not deliver the low end as tight as others can and it seems some kind of "muddy" to me. i want to tighten that up, and as my amp can give already a very warm and mid-pronounced tone (even with mid-cut on) - i would go for a PU which is a little bit scooped...

so:
.) tighter bass & low-end
.) mids: mor on the low-mids focused than on high mids.
.) high freqs: need to be pronounced good, clear, not fizzling
.) output: other herbert users recommended me was that herbie does best with not-over-top-high-output PUs, which i could really good imagine is true...

main thing: i need more CHUNK, when riding on the deep palm mutes.

any suggestions?

second matter: i think my 5-way switch is dying - it has already some "dead spots", means: when i switch the PUs, sometimes no tone is coming out, i have then to tip it a little bit, crackling noise, then sound is on again. loose contact. does THIS ONE fit?

EDIT: thread title is missing "PICKUP" on the end :-/

for a basswood bodied guitar, the only pickup i could recommend you for what you're looking for is the Blaze bridge.

what's your budget? maybe shoot Tim at Bare Knuckle an email describing what you want, if you wanna go that route.

VERY big difference. i have both of them in different guitars at the moment, and have used them in other guitars with various woods through the years.

in my experience the Blaze Custom does alot better in brighter guitars (maple, alder, etc..). i think it sounds wretched in basswood, but works great in maple neck-thrus.

Yeah, not-too-over-the-top-output, lots of low end chunk, and a focus on low mids over high mids, and clear highs sounds like you're reading a Blaze bridge spec sheet, dude. You'll absolutely love that bridge pickup.

i cannot imagine how right you were. have the blaze bridge now in the 7420 for a few weeks and its such an unbelievable difference, i'm still surprised every time i plug it in. it really does everything i want: holy fucking low end chunk, very clear pronounced highs, and lowmidgrind...i love it.

we also did a short A/B with our other guitarists 7420 with stock PUs and it made us laugh real hard how shitty it sounded. the thing is - i didn't hear that first, i had to hear a different PU to know HOW big the epic fail-factor of Ibby stock PUs is. unbelieveable i once thought that this sounded good.

Cool

Now, try raising the 8 (4 sets of 2) bass pole pieces about 1mm out of the pickup (so they stick up) and notice the blaze sound even better

will give it a try, thank you!
