This is a common misconception about 7420/7620s.

As has been stated, the Blaze really shouldn't leave you wanting for output. The Evo 7 is definitely the shriekiest, but it's far from warm and as actually fairly sterile. I'd try either a D-Sonic or a Blaze Custom. The D-Sonic is pretty popular around here. It sounds thick and big with a huge low end. If you're familiar with Dream Theater, their guitarist uses a D-Sonic in a basswood guitar. The Blaze Custom is pretty versatile. It's also got a big low end (not quite as much as the D-Sonic, but it's definitely there), but it's got more mids than the Blaze or D-Sonic. It's warm, it cuts well, it cleans up nicely, and you can definitely make it shriek. It's what I have in my main guitar (7421), and I love it, but a lot of other people here don't like it so much.

Hmm. How close, in millimeters, is the pickup from your strings when you fret at the 24th fret? The Blaze isn't the hottest pickup in the world, but it's certainly quite a bit hotter than your average humbucker.

TomAwesome, Petrucci uses a D-Sonic now, but he's more known for the tones he recorded with a Blaze (Awake) or a Steve's Special (basically he asked Dimarzio to make him a 6-string version of the Blaze, and this is what they came up with - everything after "Awake" up until he switched to EBMM, and even then he was basically using a slightly tweaked version of this pickup). The D-Sonic has only started appearing on his signature model and in live shots within the last year or two.

Oh really? My bad. I knew that he used to use the Blaze and Steve's Special, but I thought he had been using the D-Sonic a bit longer than that.

I'd say two years tops, dude - it didn't even exist much longer than that.
