Honestly the Evo 7's are very sharp pickups. They have a really high output that is focused in the mid to high frequencies. That means every pick stroke you make, considering your amp settings, will jump out at you. They have great harmonics too. For a Gbg-style sound, I actually think the Blazes might be better suited as they are wamer and a little more full sounding. Try messing with your settings a little before you drop the Blazes, because they are very metal pickups.

^ Agreed. Maybe if your lookin for a more focused tone, you should try the Blaze neck model in the bridge. So far its the only Passive that ive really liked....

Looking for an Ibanez RG970XL

Well, Duncans (aside from Blackouts, but that involves installing a battery somewhere and swapping your 5-way for a 3 since they can't be swapped) evidently don't generally sound all that great in basswood, and EMG's are pretty much non-reversible since they require routing, so of those options, I'd start with Dimarzio.

First, though, are you 100% sure those are Blazes? Blazes aren't the hottest pickups in existance, exactly, but as long as they're set reasonably close to the strings (3mm or so is a good place to start) they're definitely rather hot.

I know that the pickups in the 7620 were called "Blaze II's" in Ibanez's cataloge, incorrectly, when the guitar first came out, and I'm wondering if this is related to that, that you're talking about the stock pickups in your 7420, which are definitely NOT Blazes, or that the Blazes you have came out of a 7620, which would make them Dimarzio "New 7's" which aren't bad, but aren't great either.

I play melodic death metal in Gothenburg style mostly by the way If that matters

If your guitar is totally stock, then it does NOT have Blazes in them.

This is a common misconception about 7420/7620s.

spsb will become famous soon enough
It's funny that until now no one tell her to post on the right forum(i wonder why ).

Now on topic.

If you want a nice and heavy tone get the EMG707(can be "cold" on some rigs).

I enjoy the tone and output that the EMGs give me. I went through many passives before I decided to try the actives because I was skeptical about them and didn't want to have to route my guitar. But when I was just fed up with all the dimarzios because they weren't clear enough for what I was doing, I tried the EMGs in a 6 string of mine and was blown away by the output and added clarity. So I threw the 707 and 81-7 in my Ibanez and have stuck with them ever since. I haven't played a passive since that have matched up or made me want to change.

The only ones I have wanted to really try since my switching to the EMGs are the Bareknuckles, Lundgrens and the Blackouts. But the first two are very expensive. And that is an issue for a lot of people.

Yeah, but EMG's are certainly not "warm," and are a pretty invasive install. Considering Dimarzio has a no questions asked 30 day return policy, I'd start there before going for EMG's.

And I totally didn't notice this was in the wrong forum until now.

The question is -- are the pickups in there stock pickups? If so , they arent blazes, but New7's. The neck is decent enough, but the bridge blows apeshit from cannons.

Actual blazes are medium output pickups, and probably my main choice for basswood guitars.

Edit: I Know how to read.
Drew beat me to it. Still, i reccomend blazes for basswood.

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,
Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie,
Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee
Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread
Its branches like a Temple overhead.

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.

Eh, I think it's really they just don't mate well with basswood. The description Dimarzio gives if you ask them what the New7's were based on (IIRC, a Super Distortion in the bridge, and a Super 2 in the neck) is the same description they give you for the pickups custom-would for the CST, and the same they now give for the "IBZ/Dimarzio" pickups (which, to be fair, are 6's). I suspect they're basically the same pickup, and as you can attest they don't sound half bad in mahogany. Basswood, meanwhile, they're kind of flubby and not particularly articulate in the midrange - the qualities that make them work well with mahogany (which is all midrange, nothing else) sort of work against them in basswood (which is pretty even, almost to a fault), especially the low end which gets a bit flubby.
