GOING CRAZY - Installing DiMarzios in my RG7420

Hey all-

I snagged an Air Norton 7 and an Evolution 7 bridge p/u from eBay for a steal, and I'm trying to slap them into my 7420. I figured while I was at it, I'd go ahead and replace the volume pot, as I was having some trouble with the one that was in it.

The thing is, this is my first time doing something like this and I'm having 0 luck. I'm looking at the diagram from the Ibanez site, but I can't make heads or tails out of what connections go where, save for the red (hot, right?) lead from the bridge going to the first position connector on the 5 way toggle.

Could someone walk me through this like the n00b that I am?

EDIT - ok, I hooked them up according to that diagram, and only the bridge PU worked. Then, somehow, I wired it so that the neck pickup was active when the selector was in the bridge position, and the bridge PU did nothing.

HELPHELPHELP!

All you can do is do it one wire at a time
the v77 in the diagram is the bridge pickup, and the v77mk III is the neck pickup
wire the white and green wires of the neck pickup together and tape them off, and where the neck pickup says white wire in the diagram, use the green wire of the pickup

use the 7620 diagram instead, because that guitar had DiMarzio pickups so the wire colors will be the same as on your replacement DiMarzios.

also see this thread about installing an AN7 in the neck position on a two-humbucker guitar using the Ibanez special two-humbucker 5-way switch. basically, to keep the installation simple and to follow that diagram, you want to put the AN7 in backwards, with the coil of screw pole pieces closest to the bridge, not to the neck.

Er, white and green? The "instructions" (and I use that term loosely) that came with the EVO said tape the white and black together.

My other question is this; when I opened the guitar, lots of the connections were soldered to the bottom of the vol. pot. This diagram shows no connections there; what gives?

there are a dozen different ways to wire any humbucker. max was translating the DiMarzio wire colors into the colors on your 7420 diagram so you could wire it up the way it goes in your guitar.

yes it does--look again. maybe look over everything again, take some notes, think through the whole procedure, and then post again if you're stuck.

Ok, I figured everything out except the wiring on the switch. When I wire it up according to the diagram, I only get signal from my bridge PU. I'm thinking about just buying a 3 way switch and putting it in, because I honestly never really use the coil tap that the 5 way provides me. Plus, I've got a diagram that shows me exactly how to do that, and I think I can follow it.

Argh, this is frustrating.

I don't understand how I'm supposed to use the 7620 schematics when it shows a completely different wiring for the neck p/u. HELP!
