Gibson Dirty Finger...Help me out!
A friend is selling a new DF pickup, and I've never tried it. How does this pickup compare to a Duncan JB in a metal, or high-gain setting? Let me know everything you know about this pickup, as I'm considering selling my JB and buying the dirty finger!

I got one around 1981 to put into the first guitar I built. The rave back then was that it was Gibson's equivalent to a Duncan Distortion or Dimarzio Super Distortion. It's much hotter than the Velvet Brick, but not as hot as the X2N.
It's got a bit of a scoop to it, considering that it was an aftermarket pickup geared towards Les Pauls which are full of mids. I stuck it into a solid bodied mahogony guitar that I built, & had it up until someone broke the guitar.

I've installed the JB and Dirty fingers in my cousin's guitars and compared them side by side. I don't like either pickup, but my unbiased opinion is as follows:
Dirty Fingers = The name says it all. Real gritty sound, very original and unique. Well worth the money if you're into that sound. Perfect for 90's rock. each individual note in a chord really jumps out and bites your face off. JB = quite the opposite, smoother, rounder sound. Individual notes in chords more or less blend together (not to be mistaken with loss of clarity).
You won't need that anymore. Not anymore. It's on sale at your fuckin dollar store.

The Dirty Fingers is geared more for putting in a LP or SG & plugging straight into an older Marshall that doesn't have as much gain as today's amps do.
Play into a Dual Recto, & you'll have too much dirt. Play into a cranked JCM 800 with no disto pedal, probably much more desired results. |
