I think a good tip is to get something that DOESN'T have high output.

The cleanest, clearest pickup I ever had was the PAF style pickup that was in my Gibson SG. Wonderful pickup.

I've actually considered these for a specific build.

I love the clean tones of those big Gretch Brian Setzer models, and some of The Ventures' sounds. This would make for a fine sounding studio guitar.

i've never played anything that comes close to this...especially through the right amp. it might not work all that well with your rig for heavy tones, but it's definitely worth a mention:
