EMG 707 vs Blackouts - Anyone have Clips?
Really curious to get some blackouts from zim's store but wanna know if they will sound better (to my ears) vs the 707s.
If anyone has clips of 707s vs blackouts can you post the clips to compare them? Thanks |

good call, for all the hype the blackouts have in the way of "blowing emg's away", i'd love to hear some comparisons. I really dig the standard size blackout's being released, and if i ever buy another set of actives(i ONLY use actives and have bought tons of actives in the past) i'm going to buy a standard set of blackouts. But that being said, i cant help but feel that they are pretty much the same thing as emg's. They may have more "output", i'v played a blaze against emgs and the blaze was much louder but its not that big of a deal to me. I'd love to hear a comparison, and even though i'm a die hard emg'er, i'd love nothing more than to actually hear the blackouts "blow away" the emg's so i can get a better pup that takes my favorite pups a step further, but i just dont think theres going to be a very big differance.

You won't find that out from hearing webclips. If you like 707s the Blackout neck sounds somewhat similiar, but it's just vastly improved. Quieter, more articulate, smoother mids, just an overall cleaner and more organic sound. Depending on the way it's recorded I could easily make one sound great and the other sound horrific.
I'd just try it out, there's a return policy if somehow you didn't like it. That said if someone has clips, sure post away but I just have really never heard accurate tones from something like that. I guess if you want to hear what they sound like with a Behringer GMX212 you could listen to my band ![]() ![]() Quote:
![]() I really don't see what the risk is. You could always return them or get EMGs back. IMO if you like EMGs you owe it to yourself to try the Blackouts, most people find that they are a big improvement. |

well, imo, if you cant tell the differance of sound in the clips, that are recorded the same way with the same settings, then i think it would further push in the direction that these are more hype than truth about "blowing away" emgs

I'd have to somewhat agree with zimbloth on this one. Another factor not mentioned would be the woods and trems (etc). Pretty much in order to tell the difference youd have to have two identical guitars with the identical rig- just different pickups in each which i highly doubt anyone has but hey... could be out there lol

i dunno, i tried out a blackout equipped guitar and they didn't blow me away... didn't sound a whole lot different from EMGs to me, not enough to make me want to go back to actives
. and i was a die hard EMG user for years.i never found EMGs noisy either, so SD's claim of whatever db less noise isn't much of a selling point either. the only thing that i do love is that they come in a "normal" 7 string housing . |

again, like i said, i really havnt played any blackouts, but i'm prettymuch expecting what ed just said was the case. the only advantage to blackouts is the size options. Also, i never had any noise problems with emgs other than standing too close to a television.
and nick, i might be using the wrong terms here about the output, basically i ment my blaze was much louder than the emg's. I'v installed probably 50 to 100 pups for myself and friends, aswell as being raised with an electric engineer for a father(he had all of the meters and tools i ever needed), point being, i know both were working perfectly, and the blaze was just much louder at the same volume also, i'd go ahead and grab up a set of blackouts, but not being convinced that they are better, i dont really wanna laydown 200 bones for practically the same thing, espically knowing that, due to the hype of these(founded or unfounded), the resale price of emg's has dropped a bit and wouldnt get a very good return for my investment for practically the same thing. Like i said, to be honost, i wish i had axcess to a set to try out and be wow'ed so i could have a better pup, but unless any 6'ers come stock with BO's, the guitar center around here wont have any |

![]() I don't have, and have never owned a passive pickup as quiet as my EMGs... I was running them with a fair amount of gain and no gate/suppresion, and I had zero noise. The argument that the blackouts are "quieter" has never resonated with me at all. ![]()

i think maybe the reason why the Blaze was louder than the EMG, is because active pickups tend to have less dynamics than passives, unless you do the 18V mod, i think... when you play hard, actives compress, while passives just keep on dealing it out :P
