It'll work fine, and it's not just half-assed. Some people are only mediocre solderers, and this way works fine, as long as you're A) careful, and B) tape everything off nice and snug.

Yep, this is the way I do it, I have wire runs from the switch, and I'll just desolder them, and solder the pickup wires onto them, tape it off and I am done. It's way easier that way as otherwise you end up through time just completely burning the switch, and will need to eventually replace it. THis way you eventually replace the wire going from it if it gets too short, and means you know EXACTLY where the pickup wires should be attached to.
