I'd recommend a Bareknuckle over a Lundgren. The Nailbomb is more articulate than a Lundgren, is less bright (which may not be a good thing in your 2228), and has punchier and more natural sounding bass. The Lundgren sounds very close to a 81-7 though, you could like it, but I would at least recommend a bareknuckle for the neck pickup unless you like how 81s sound in the neck.

You could get one of the EMG Bass Controls or Systems:Electric Guitar Pickups & Accessories - EMG Pickups | EMG-EXB. EMG says these can be used with any of their pick-ups, not just the bass-specific ones.

The easiest would be to swap-out an existing tone knob for a BTC-Control. If you've got a guitar with a Vol/Tone/3-way toggle, you can drop in a BTC-System, without drilling any new holes. The big difference there, is that the selector switch is replaced by a blend knob.

The Ultimate Question: What string gauge is needed for 18.84# of tension when tuned to E2 on a 27" scale guitar?

Mike Sherman talked a lot about EMG HZ 40, and he said that they sounded awesome for 8 strings.

Maybe you just want to try them.

The EMG40DC is supposed to sound close to what a 81-8 would sound and it's active so no need to swap pots.

Thats really not too bad for something i can just swap out. Id much rather have bareknuckles or Lundgrens but thats also another 100 to get them replaced from a smith because i cant do them myself

I would say try some bass pickups. Bass pickups have a resonance (that I have seen) peak of around 1.5-2khz, which should brighten up your tone quite a bit, but you would theoritically loose some frequency response on the top end. I would say play with some production model (no wait time) for about $100ish. Then if nothing does it for you, look at customs.
