So I got myself a PAF7... [problems with sound]

Hi everyone, a few weeks ago I started a thread asking what pick up shoud I get and decided to get a PAF 7 Ibanez RG7321 pick up question

So it finally arrived and I installed it yesterday (bridge position) with help of manual and this diagram http://www.dimarzio.com//media/diagrams/C.pdf.

Here is the photo and my own diagram explaining how how I installed it into my RG7321

I thought I did it right (but again I'm a noob in these things) but at the end result was pretty bad.

It sounds pretty much like stock pickup on 7321 or maybe even worse.

Higher notes are almost impossible to hear, lower notes with some crazy distortion are alright altough a lilttle bit more quiet than they used to be beofore and no different from stock... Also I noticed that it's a lot harder to do harmonics and there is a lot less sustain. With not significant amount of disstortion it sounds like @#$%#@$ , or as a bass with very little overdrive. There is almost no sustain on higher notes - especially past 15th fret, sound fades away almost instantly and again - highs sound as if there was no distortion at all. Also it looks like tone knob does almost nothing (or maybe im just being paranoid)

it's kind of hard to explain it all but I think it's pretty clear that there is something wrong with either pick up or the way I installed it (I hope it's the second one and can be fixed) because it sounds worse than stock pick up I had.

Any ideas about wtf did I do wrong?
Thanks

well i have it for a week now - but it's pretty much un-returnable if that's what you were gona suggest.
and it's not far from the strings - half an inch, just like the previous one , and i think
neck pick up is on the same level

I would install it according the Ibanez RG7621 diagram as the switches might be different on your guitar vs the dimarzio pdf.

Try using this diagram, and let me know how it works out. I used this wiring diagram on the previous Ibanez I owned with Dimarzio's in it, and it worked out real nice.

thats true - they are different but here is why I did it this way - when i unsoldered stock pickup it had red wire going to first contact (not sure if that's how it's called) and then blue and white together to the 5th one - so it kinda made sence to install PAF7 in a similar way (im pretture sure some people might laugh when they read it)...
anyway could you give me the link to Ibanez RG7621 diagram ?

techjsteele
thanks for diagram but im pretty sure that's the same way I did it

i'm pretty sure connection is good, but I'll re-do it first thing in the morning - just for the hell of it, maybe a miracle will happen and it will work)) it'd hate to take it out and put stock one back in, not to mention that i'd loose $70...

If nothing works take the guitar to a tech, it would suck if you paid the cash for nothing. Post another different pic of the guitar with the work done so far, maybe we are missing something...

Look, different companies use different wiring codes for hot leads, grounds, and north and south coils. You're going to have to translate the codes from Ibanez/DiMarzio to Seymour Duncan, and start over. Here are two sites with wiring codes (both agree, fortunately):
Guitarelectronics.com Inc. Color Codes
Wiring Diagram

Distance from the strings, bad soldering and all is nonsense. Seymour Duncan and DiMarzio/Ibanez use different color codes. It's not possible to get it to work right without translating them. You'll want to rewrite the correct diagram, using the correct wiring colors - it's a lot easier than trying to do it "in your head", trust me on that one.
