Damn it! GAS! blackjack needs TLC!

Ok, so i've come to this odd? conclusion about the SD's in the blackjack:

they're kinda harsh, and too focused? for my tastes, believe it or not. i was playing my only working electric 6 at the moment, a tokai PRS copy.

goddamn this thing sounds good! the reason i bought it was because it's a looker, it feels great, and the tone is really big and open, with a bit of the blooming harmonic quality to them - i even notice this on the clean channel.

so in short, i am asking for help finding a bridge pickup for now (a neck pickup later) that has these tonal qualities:

1. decent clean tone
2. sounds big, open. not sure how else to describe it.
3. sounds raw. think 5150 vs something else lol
4. I would like a little bit more emphasis on lower mids then higher mids, i think.
5. that blooming quality where you get the octave-up harmonic is also a sweet sweet sound lol.

any suggestions? as far as i know, it's a stock JB in the bridge. I think i will leave the 59 in the neck for now, since im not even sure i can afford a new pickup right now..

I was thinking something medium output? not sure what there is in that market for 7's though. if had $$, i'd just BKP the thing lol

3 cheers for free gear!

i know alot of guys on here look down on Dimarzios... but the Blaze bridge sounds fucking phenomenal in mahogany, and has loads of low mids. it has like a hot P.A.F. quality in mahogany.

really Budda, your description of what you want sounds like the Blaze bridge to me.

I'm with you. I don't like the stock SD's in the blackjack either, but it might be relative to the amount of gain/comp you use. At least in my case, I play with a lot of both and don't like the sound. Drew, on the other hand, uses very little gain and no compression at all and he makes the things sound fantastic.

Aren't the stocks their most popular set, that 59/Jazz?

It's a JB and a '59.

Tone is subjective though. Helll, my favorite tone is from blazes in basswood, and I hate the EMG707 in the neck position. It's all in what you dig.

i've found the actual guitar has more to do with this than pickups or amps... of course they help, but every guitar has those "sweet spots" (some more than others) on different parts of the neck. every guitar i own has them in different places, and i use them accordingly for it.

ed, i will give some consideration to the blaze!

chris, i run really low gain - the TS gives me more then half of the crunch you'll hear .

if you can try out a jsx anywhere nearby, try this:
presence: 5
resonance: 7
EQ: 6
gain: 2

that's what my ultra channel is set to lol. w/o the TS, its definitely medium gain rock territory. the boost just slams it into metal, its awesome.

it comes down to can i afford $40-$60, and do i want a new pickup or a setup? *sigh*

any more options anyone can think of? im guessing that medium output is what will give me that open/raw/big sound im after.

I own a Blackjack and slowly I'm coming around to the idea that I need to ditch the JB and the 59. I have a Loomis for metal people's faces. I'm thinking of really pushing the Blackjack in a much more vintage direction. I'm kicking around going wit more PAF like pickups or maybe something like Stan Hinesley Fusion pickups which have a very P-90 like tone. If Tomy Iommi can record a lot of early Sabbath with P-90s then they're good enough for us mortals.
