Calling Frank Falbo!!

Hello,

I am planning on installing a Blackout 7 in the bridge of my Carvin DC727, but I would also like to install a single coil 7 in the neck. (currently there is space for a humbucker.)

I know I cannot mix an active bridge with a passive neck pickup.

Therefore, I am wondering, can I get a Blackout 7 single coil neck pickup?

I really only use the neck pickup for solos, so a humbucker is just not gonna cut it in the neck position.

If there is no active 7 single for the neck, could you recommend a combo of a passive bridge humbucker with a tonality similar to a Blackout and a passive 7 single coil neck with a fluid/strat-esque tone?

Thank you very sincerely,

Matt

just so you know, even with a passive sized Blackout 7 you will still have to do routing similar to what you would need do with an 7 string EMG. Carvin pickup routes are about 1/4" narrower than other companies routes. and it doesn't look like you can do any modifications to the blackout to make it fit without routing.

Thanks for the info.

I did know some routing would be involved... I'm hoping to find a good active single coil for the neck ala an EMG SA.

hey dude, a quick fyi
you actually Can put passives and actives together, you just have to put the pup switch earlier in the wiring, like right off the jack, i've done it a few times

I'm not sure what I can add to this one, other than to experiment with different wiring configurations of the stock Carvin neck pickup (parallel/split) then feed it through a preamp prior to hitting the switch. That way you can blend them. Do not quote me on this, but it may be possible to get (crom the Custom Shop) a "blackout single" stuck inside of a humbucker cover. But at this stage it would be very custom, and likely cost prohibitive. It would be made like our new Blackout 6-string single coils (which haven't even been released yet) but poured into the 7-string HB cover.

Thanks 7 String for the info!

So, in theory, I could have a Blackout 7 in the bridge, and a passive single coil in the neck? That would be exactly what I'm looking for! So, can any of you fellas point me in the direction of a 7 string single coil for typical strat style sounds? I like the fluid/glassy tone you can get on a strat with the neck p/up only position.
Thanks everyone for the great info!

Oh Frank,
any idea how much a custom job like you mentioned would cost? 200? 300? More?
Thanks again!

It occurred to me that while a passive neck pickup would offer me the tone I'm after, it would most likely be kind of noisy... so an active would be best as far as quietness is concerned. Since EMG doesn't offer single coil 7's, my only option would be the hypothetical Blackout single. I really hope the guys at the custom shop would do this for me! I know that a slightly noisy pickup isn't a big deal at gigs, but I only do home recording now, so I'd prefer a quiet pickup for recording purposes.

Anyhow, in case I cannot get the Blackout single, does anyone here have any suggestions for a good neck single coil pickup for my 7? I appreciate any experiences/opinions you could offer me.
Thanks again!

Well, my problem may be solved.EMG has released the 707-TW, which is a humbucker that can be split into a single coil using a push/pull pot. Apparently they had to release something new to compete with the Blackouts! (Or, just meet the need for a splittable 7 string active humbucker) Anyhow, methinks I shall try these out when my carvin gets here. Unless...Blackouts aren't splittable, are they?
I just had another thought--
Could I use a Blackout in the bridge, and the EMG 707-TW in the neck? That way, I could get a single coil sound in the neck, and still get bridge tone I would like from the Blackout! Any more info would be much appreciated!

Thanks Ibznorange.

The sound clips of the various pickups sound like what I'm after.

I'm not sure how I'd mount the pickup in the cavity to make it look nice...maybe there is some sort of pickup cover I could get? I'll research that.

Thanks for your help!

Maybe gold curtain rails and blue carpet hmmmmm j/k. Blue would never work.
Frank. Just saw you demoing the mayhem. This might sounds a lil weird, but i play finger style fusion. 335, music man silhouette. Vintage fender and soldano amps. I love the open sound of the pedal. In your opinion, would it work in a more tame mode for jazz fusion with a lot of finger dynamics ? Or wouls i be better of with the power grid ?
Any info you can give is greatly appreciated. Oh btw a lot of my work is doing sessions, so the quietness thing ? Cheers Paul.
