I always felt the LP sound (after the wood / set neck) was the 22 fret 24.75 scale.

1) God has nothing to do with it.
2) Because I said so.

The scale length contributes, sure. To what degree, is debatable. The 22 fret thing is a moot point, as I'm talking about bridge humbuckers.

the 22 fret is nada. im going to give my and say that the biggest factors are
mahogany body/maple cap
shorter scale
SET NECK
the set neck is a really important part of the warmth of les pauls

Why the hell has no-one mentioned the Epiphone Les Paul Classic 7 string?

I've played one and it exceeded all my expectations. I think you can get them kinda cheap too.

a mahogany body WILL help, though not as much as a full mahogany setup, but it will help alot...

i´d say go for a schecter C7, myself, not the Hellraiser (if you want the passive pickup tone, assuming the les paul had passive humbuckers here...)

it´s got a set neck, TOM bridge, 2 passive humbuckers (duncans), mahogany neck/body... that´s pretty much a damn les paul right there! :P
