![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Heavy Gauge String Question I just got a few Qs regarding heavy gauge strings. I tried for the first time a .068 elixir (first time with that gauge and elixirs). I think the string is really nice but I think Im finding its kinda bassy/boomy. It sounds great with some patches on the gnx3k and the evo just loves it - but like playing on the 4+5+6th strings its sounds like a nice crunchy guitar and then when I go over the 7th it sounds very un guitar like in tone. I also noticed that this .068 is double wound like a bass string which I didnt know about initially. So here are my questions. 1) At what gauge have you guys found that the string goes into that bass/boomy zone? 2) Which string manufacturers do you find have heavier gauge that dont have the above symptoms? or dont have double wound strings? Or is this the nature of the beast? Thanks heavy gauge string n00b. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | pretty much everything you can do to a guitar in terms of adjustment can affect the tone.. so many options. maybe try lowering the bass side of your bridge pickup a hair? not sure if that'll help or not, but its worth a shot. 3 cheers for free gear! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Bass strings are double wound after .60, not guitar strings. I know the .70 I used was single wound (from D'Addario, btw). |

Like if your playing a power chord on the E+A strings and play another power chord on the B+E strings does the tone sound simlar? Or is the second power chord just bassier and less tonal? | |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | There's no defined line between boomy and crisp tones. Scale length has everything to do with tone, though. On a 25.5" scale guitar, I would personally consider a .064" my limit on boominess, but I prefer to stay closer to .060" to get a more tolerable tone. Stainless steel strings have a crisper tone than nickel winds, but they wear your frets out more quickly...but it depends on your playing technique. Pickup height and model make a huge difference, too. A nice maple body and maple or ebony fretboard help make the tone crisper, too. Ultimately, you will decide on what sounds best for you. I'd start with a .064" or so, and make adjustments until you are satisfied with your tone. |
