Shimmin' question

So i shimmed my UV a while ago. I had to shim up the bass side, cause for whatever reason, the frets would fret out on the treble side if i had the action level across the bridge. I could put the action low on the bass side, but not quite as low on the treble side.

So i shimmed it. And it plays great now, low as shit action across the board.

However, notes on the 5th & 6th string sound kind of "Hollow" in comparison to the other ones. What causes this? How can i fix it?

I tried a paper shim first, then replaced it with a slice of my long expired neon green credit card, thinking maybe paper was a bad conductor of sound...

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,
Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie,
Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee
Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread
Its branches like a Temple overhead.

I just shimmed my UV too Ken and I find that thin card is a great shim and much better than paper.

As for the strings sound kind of hollow, are the frets in need of a crown? A possible refret? If its something happening to just those two strings - have you tried some other strings - quite possible you might gotten dull/dead strings.

frets? maybe. However, the strings are the ones that i've had on there, and its only after adding the shim that the problem occured.

i figured it out: I guess the shim was too long. Shortened it and it solved the problem for the most part.

i've also seen this problem solved by having the trem higher on one side than on the other. it always seems weird to me to set the trem up like that, but my LACS RG came that way and i assume it was set up by pros. i leveled the trem out and just went with slightly higher action.

glad you got yours to work fine.
