Volume Mod for 2:90
Alright guys, I've got an idea to do something, and I need some input on how to go about doing it.
I just got a 2:90, and I'm going to be running both sides of it into 1 cab (stereo). I have absolutely no need to have 2 independant volumes. One volume knob for both channels would be ideal. So I'm wondering if it would be possible to rewire it to have 1 of the volumes control both. Can you think of any harm this would cause? My brother was worried about phase cancellation issues. After talking about this on HRI with some people, someone suggested a toggle switch to select either a stereo mode, or a mono mode operation... to which I thought of possibly using a push/pull type of pot that would be either stereo in one mode or pull for mono control of both channels. But I don't know if there's any type of push/pull pot made that will accomplish this. Any thoughts? (Donnie, I know you work for Warmoth now... Know any electrical wizards there who would have an idea of how to make this work?) ![]() Metal... Nuff Said!! If memory serves me correctly, the 2:90 is not just a stereo amp, but two completely discreet amps that are capable of being bridged. I don't think any mod would be simple.

Well, you're still talking about running the amp in "stereo" meaning two channels. You just want one knob to control the volume of each simultaneously, right? If there's room in the chassis, you just get a stacked pot of equal value, and bring the wires from the unused pot over to the bottom lugs of the dual pot. No phasing issues. But it renders the second pot dead. As far as I can figure without getting into that amp's chassis, you'd need a DPDT switch to be able to switch back and forth (perhaps with a HUGE pop or volume surge during switching) You'd need a "make before break" switch. You would probably be best served with a 3PDT instead, so you could also bring the ground back and forth.
Now for all I know, the Mesa is using a stacked pot already, to perform two functions at once, like a volume/tone filter at the same time. I've never been inside a Mesa power amp, just heads and combos. |
