Ditto. I'm planning on experimenting with Blackouts at some point, but I'm definitely not looking to replace my 707s.

If you own bolt-on guitars, I guarantee you that most, if not all, of them are shimmed. It is a standard setup practice. Guitars come shimmed from the factory. You'd be amazed at the effect a 1/2" wide strip the thickness of a business card will have on your action and neck angle. A bridge height adjustment ALWAYS goes hand in hand with a neck adjustment, so you are doing nothing to alter the playability.

i guess i didn't clarify, i meant that i would never alter a guitar i already had set up and shimmed to my liking just to accomodate another pickup. i would just deepen the pickup route in that case.

Routing a guitar is non-reversible. Shimming is. Why wouldn't you perform a simple setup, rather than routing into the guitar?

i guess i'm missing something here . if i already have my guitar set up in the best possible way for myself, playability wise, why would changing that setup be beneficial just to compensate for a pickup?

Are you gonna leave the neck on it when you route the body? If not, your setup is going to get changed.

A good setup isn't that hard to achieve. Reall, you're making more out of this than you need to.

Well, what about in a neck-through, or a set neck scenario....?

i don't see why i would need to remove the neck to slightly deepen a pickup cavity. i really don't think i'm making a big deal out of it. i think it just boils down to personal preference. if i'm shimming the neck pocket and most likely the locking nut (if the guitar has one), i'm gonna have to raise the bridge as well... i personally don't like bridges that sit up high from the body, therefore i would opt to just slightly deepen the pickup cavity in a super shallow Ibanez route so i could put any pickups i want in at any time and not have to worry about doing any extra shimming in the future. i'm not saying either way is right or wrong. i just like the idea of having a universal pickup route that will accept Dimarzios, Duncans, Bare Knuckles, etc...

it means you will have to route the pickup cavity deeper, which isn't a big deal and doesn't do any cosmetic damage that you will see once the pickups are installed.
