Ah man! I e-mailed your custom shop looking for a Blackout single coil, but if you make a production version, all the better!

If they come out with a passive sized 707 or 81-7, etc. it could be perceived as "following the leader" in a way, which puts them at a disadvantage. They certainly can't be the "first" anymore. And if it has sharp corners, it won't fit right in the Ibanez routes, and perhaps some of the other passive routes. So then, if they round the corners off, they've just come out with a "Seymour Duncan Blackout look-a-like" which may be really uncomfortable for them.
I can only help but laugh at the corner EMG has painted themselves into. When I look at the passive sized 7-string Blackouts, I think, "That is what an EMG 707 would look like if they weren't so lazy as to just shove it into a bass housing". After all, their six string pickups have rounded edges and plastic mount tabs with threaded metal inserts. If it didn't say "Seymour Duncan" on it, I doubt I'd be able to tell the difference.

Considering how many people use EMG six string pickups, though, I doubt they really care all that much. Bravo to Duncan for actually listening to the consumer. Now offer a Custom5-7 so I can quit doing magnet swaps.

I believe that's what we would call a "Shop Floor Custom" and can be ordered for little or no extra charge. I'm with you. I think the Custom 5 7-string is a super alternative to the Dimarzio Blaze, for anyone who thinks the Blaze bridge is a little too scoopy.

Anyway you can order a Custom 7 with an Alnico 5 magnet.

Do you need to mount the Blackouts close to the strings like EMG as well?

I'm still really digging the DActivators in my 1527 (they're kinda singlecoil-y, with the attack), but if I get bored, I just might try that. My only experience with Duncans ('59 and JB in my C7 Blackjack) has been favorable, and it's always cool to support a fellow forumite...

How is this one in basswood, anyway?

I've always been curious about the Custom 5 model. I tried the Custom Custom and I thought it was just, beyond awful. I love the regular Custom, but being a touch warmer would be sweet. I may have to order one of those someday.

Frank, I'm really digging the Blackout 7s I received. I have to say though, words can't express how great my custom 6 sounds w/ the blackouts

Makes sense. What I dislike about the 81 is the thin element it presents in the bridge position. The only time I ever liked an 81 in the bridge was in an all mahogany les paul. When I got my first EMG loaded guitar I came off playing a JB in the bridge. The 85 felt more at home to me than the 81 did.

I always heard the opposite, that you should set EMG's farther back. I have my 85 in the bridge on my guitar practically sitting flat with the pickup ring and it sounds good.

So, do I order it from my local Duncan retailer, or do I have to contact Duncan directly. 'Cause I wanna order two or three of them right now.

Man, and I've gone and collected two A5's and an A8 now.
