uh im sure your sick of these but i need pickup advice.

what sort of pups for my halo?
i play metal, but want a clean sound as well.
i'm into tool, strapping young lad, nevermore pantera, iron maiden, dream theatre, c.o.c...etc and would desire a sound somewhere in the range of those bands.
i've been loooking at bareknuckles warpig/nailbomber, and ducans jb/59
any suggestions would be appreciated.

also does anyone know if dtunas work on the low bstring?

Check out the HUGE thread we have for pickups on here. Secondly, use the search feature.

D-Tunas will work on the Low B. I had one on my old BCRich Warlock 7-string. Here's the deal though. D-Tunas work on FR-style trems that are NON-floating. You can't use these on Ibanez Lo-pro style trems. If your trem floats, you'll have to block it so that you can't pull up (divebombing is ok). EVH designed the D-Tuna to work with his non-floating FR trems. If you wanna use this feature, you gotta configure your trem this way.

From what I've seen, a TON of people on here seem to think the Dimarzio Air Norton 7 is THE definitive neck pickup.

It's the shit, I'll tell you that.

If you like Nevermore (me too ), and you aren't afraid to route your guitar ( !), then maybe EMG's are the thing. Nevermore's guitarist Jeff Loomis uses them, and he's got pretty fuckin' sweet tone I think.

I use Dimarzio AN7 and Blaze Custom. Great pickups, and versatile enough to play anything. They do like metal, though! But there's quite a few good pickups out there. My thoughts...

Dimarzio. Best all-around choices are probably the AN7 for the neck, and either the a) Blaze Bridge, or b) Blaze Custom, for the bridge. But, the other noteworthies being, the EVO7, which is a good bridge pup for metal generally, and the PAF7, which is a real nice neck pup (mellower and cleaner). The Blaze neck is also pretty decent, and works equally well in the bridge or he neck (even though it's primarily a neck pickup). I'm not nuts about the Tone Zone 7, but it has its applications, and sounds better in brighter woods. Probably a terrific jazz 7-string bridge pickup. Still beats the pants of most stocks, though!

Seymour Duncan. The '59-7 neck is fatter and louder, the Jazz-7 neck is sweet and beautiful. Both are very versatile (the jazz even kicks ass in the bridge, for the lower-output school of pickup application. Doesn't mean it sounds weak, though!). The 2 best SD bridge pups are probably the JB-7 and the Custom-7. The JB is a bit more hyped up, and the Custom is thick and nasty. Both work great for rock and/or metal. Some people also like the Invader-7, as it's very fat and very powerful. But some complain it can get muddy if you're not careful. For precise styles, maybe not the best choice, unless you really know how to EQ your setup.

EMG. We have 2 choices... 707 and 81-7. The 707 works great in either position, and the 81-7 is primarily a bridge pickup. It's a bit brighter and more strident in the top-end than the 707. If you like EMGs, you'll probably love these. Clear, powerful, compressed, and great for high gain. Also low-impedance, so no shocks for you, and they'll retain their tone through effects/pedals/cables/etc.

Lundgren. The Model M is the pickup of note. EMG-like clarity and power, but passive. The same pickup Meshuggah use in their 7's. Lots of bass and treble, scopped mids, but still warm. I think they make a matched set for neck and bridge, but the bridge pickup is the one you generally hear about.

Bartolini. I haven't played these, but Frank Falbo swears by them. Active (if you want), unequaled clarity and definition string-to-string (almost like each string has it's own pickup). The actives combine the best of both worlds- active power, quietness, and the not getting zapped factor, while retaining passive warmth and dynamics. Also endlessly versatile with EQ options. Plus they look cool.

This is the concise list. I have no knowledge of Bareknuckles or the other boutique pickup makers, but I've heard some good things. As said before, look around, because there's FAR more detailed information on this website, as well as on www.jemsite.com, John Petrucci's forum, and the Seymour Duncan forum.

thank all of you for your suggestions.
as far as routing for emgs, i knew you had to, but how much do you need to cutaway?i already have a guitar with emgs and enjoy it.
still considering all the choices, going to play a few more down at my locall shop.

^ EMG 7-string pups are WAY larger & require a lot more routing than standard passive 7-string pups. The EMG707 and 81-7 are actually 5-string bass housings with guitar pup guts in them. Needless to say, they are big!
