no tone knob? why not no volume?

i was thinking today, for those of you who are thinking of axing your tone knob, why stop there?

i'm thinking that you could take out the volume pot as well, and possibly replace it with a 2-way switch, for a sort of on/off operation. i'd imagine that make the signal even hotter?

just a thought

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
We'll cross the streams.

An interesting idea. I use the knob for fades every now and then, so the switch wouldn't work for me. I wouldn't miss the tone knob if it fell off because it stays on 10 all the time.

You could do it. The Gibson Nikki Sixx Signature Thunderbird bass just had a single on/off switch. That's it.

Beelzebloke is a jewel in the rough
I had a Yamaha years back with no tone knob, I wired in a "kill-switch" ( mini toggle ) for doing staccato nonsense... I never used the volume knob but never though of removing it completely, I wish I'd've thought of that at the time as it would've looked pretty cool.
Incidentally it was an early 1xHB version of the RGtype they do now that has a "direct" switch that bypasses the vol&tone circuit altogether.

So yeah, as long as you don't use it, and won't ever want to in the future, why not?

I gotta admit I never touch the tone or volume pots on the guitar I use for DM.

But if I'm playing bluesy stuff on the strat I like using the volume control to get more or less drive into the amp, though of course I could use a volume pedal to do this.

Mmm, you've made me wonder now ( imagines 7string "knobless" )...
The downside would be the inevitable "where's your knob" gags...

Yeah, I never use the tone on my guitar. However, I use a tone knob on basses quite a bit.

when i'm rock'n out, i usually leave both volume and tone's at 10, but for not-so-rock'n playing, i love having the added dynamics of the volume and tone to shape the sound.

but, if i ever got one of those bridge-pup-only or tone-knobless guitars, i think i'd put in a on/off switch. maybe i'd do that to a PGM if i can ever afford one

Man, I use my tone and volume knobs all the time! That ain't even enough fer me. I always wanted like maybe an EMG VMC control on a guitar, too. (Variable Mid Control- it's a sweepable, semi-parametric midrange control for bass and guitar. )

There was a guy in a local band around here called Rain Fell Within that had a guitar made form Warmoth parts that had no knobs at all - he used a volume pedal, IIRC.

Yeah, same here! I love being able to adjust the crunch level with the guitar's volume pot for a given amp channel setting. And jazz just doesn't sound right unless the tone knob is rolled almost completely towards bass. I've never been able to understand the minimalists who are happy with just a bridge humbucker, no tone, and an on/off switch. Me, I need as many pickup positions as possible, a volume and a tone, and a whammy bar. I'm sure if I ever used a mid-boost like Dark Wolf was talking about I'd need that, too!

A minimalist who has that setup only knows one thing: music that sounds like a repetitive punch in the face. They don't use the other shit, so why have it in the way?
