What do you guys think of the Dimebucker? Yay or Nay?
Everyone on the ultimate guitar forums hate them, saying they are muddy.
Total Guitar magazine rave on about how awesome they are, but they gave the Razorback DB (The basswood, chinese made hardtail one) value-for-money points. Whilst saying the Japanese Mark Morton Jackson was too expensive. So I reckon their judgment is questionable. Since I trust you guys so much ( ), what do you guys think of the Dimebucker? And how does it compare to the Bill Lawrence L-500XL and the Dimarzio X2N? |

I despise the Dimebucker. It is all midrange honk, treble fizz, and farting bass. No one should use that pickup. Ever. Dime didn't even use it, no matter what marketing tells you. He used a L-500XL, flipped around so the hot coil was further from the bridge.

Bill Lawrance or the X2N, the Dimebucker is a bucket of nails, covered in shit.
I'm assuming he's going to want to mass produce these rack pies, and why not? I love racks, I love pies, so put them together and you have pie covered titties. - JJ

I have a Lawrence L500XL in my #1 Warmoth, and it's a great pickup. I have a 5-position Superswitch just for the L500 that gets me all possible coil choices, and with concentric tone/volume controls I can balance the tapped single coils with the neck pickup for quack, or one GIANT humbucker, etc. It's the only pickup I've ever really liked the coil-tapped tone on. I have to admit I've never tried a Dimebucker, Seymour Duncan actually learned to make pickups from Bill Lawrence when they were working in Dan Armstrong's London shop in the late 1960's (so did Kent Armstrong, for that matter). Why buy a copy? Duncan is a great marketer, like Bill Gates or Nike....
I'm a little concerned that Dimebag Darrell is still designing products 3 years after he died, Randall AND Krank amps, about 18 different Dean guitars, stompboxes and now pickups too? Of course, Hendrix's endorsement career has really taken off recently too.... ![]() |

my friend has one installed in one of those japanese ESPs. Sounds. Like. Shit. It's a good thing he picked up the ESP for dirt cheap otherwise I would have slapped him. It's so trebly and fizzy, it pains me.
Magazine reviews are a load of bollocks. A company can just pay them some dollaroonies and then they have to write a good review. ![]() |

I have not knowingly even heard a Dimebucker, let alone played one, but I did once have an L-500 in an older Washburn N4. IMHO, I thought it was ok (it has a nice "slice" character to it), but eventually replaced it with a DiMarzio TZ and was much happier. Bear in mind that guitar had a paduak neck and body too though, so results will definitely vary depending on your guitar's woods...good luck in your quest for your tone!

The original L-500`s are much better (if you can find them) than the current ones, and have more bottom end to them. They were really originally designed as a bass pup, but guitarists cought on to them, as they have great highs, and are well balanced.
Bill lawrence quit making pups for a long period, and when he came back to it, they didn`t sound quite the same as the originals, as the suppliers of the wire, & magnets had changed. The new ones sound much brighter than the originals. This is why Dime turned the pup around, so the north coil was closer to the neck for more bottom end. ![]() |
