Hah, that's cool For me, I pretty much let the amp dictate which pickup to use. I prefer the sweetness and organic quality of alnicos, but sometimes they just don't get the job done in terms of tightness or response. It varies guitar to guitar, amp to amp. My VHT vastly prefers ceramics so that's what I've been rolling with lately.

Absolutely true.

But since I use modelers, it's relatively easy to tweak everything else around the pickup.


Active alnicos are basically the ideal pickup for a digital modeler, I think. Hell... I think it's the ideal pickup PERIOD.

Yeah I get great results w/ my Behringer w/ the 707, even better with the Blackouts. The 707 and the VHT are a great mix too, so the Blackout neck would be as well. I just know I wasn't happy with how the JB responded w/ my amp on the low B string, too loose.

I had that same problem with everything I tried. That JB was just way too "wooly."

I wish you could hear the Wolfe rewind of the JB in Mike's Soloist. The older, cooler wind of the JB is why us older farts all rave about that pickup. It's the pickup that you hear on Surfing With the Alien.

I've ranted about it ad nauseum in various threads (lackout ones, the bc rich jr v deluxe thread, etc), but I should consolidate my thoughts and submit a formal review though, yeah.

They are really worth checking out Dave, it's a totally unique sound. It likely won't be your favorite tone, but I'm almost positive most people who aren't EMG fans or even ceramic fans could get behind these (especially the neck model).

The "Surfing with the Alien" album was a Kramer Pacer and a couple of Strat copies. Two of those guitars had a JB/59 set, and one he would swap between a SSS pickguard and a HH pickguard with a 59/Custom set.
