Reshaping/shaving a 7620 neck?
Hi!
I used to own a UVGR and UVPWH. The PWH had the perfect shape neck for me for a 7-string. Now I have a 7620, and the neck profile is different enough that I am thinking of taking a chance on reshaping (shaving) it to try and make it the same/similar to the PWH neck. Any tips? On the back of the neck, I do not know what it is called but I call them the "shoulders," and they are too high. When you put your thumb on the back of the neck, the very top (close to the edge where the low B is...standard tuning...) would be one "shoulder." That is the one that is most annoying to me (I am in a wheelchair for life, so I only have one real playing position; plus I am a girl, and my hands are a little smaller and not as strong )

I did mine on my own actually. The neck on one of my RG'S is ridiculously ridiculously thin lol. I hand sanded mine.. if youre going to do it I dont suggest using a sanding machine as your neck can crack pretty easily.
Happy Sanding! lol NEW ALBUM OUT ON MARCH 11 2008!!! www.AngelVivaldi.net | myspace.com/angelvivaldi1 |Black Market Hero |

heres the gig dude, the uv necks arent thinner. they have flatter backs.
theyre about the same thickness, maybe a mm less at the most, at the thickest part, its just flatter. the uv neck has a sharper curvature on the edges and a flat back, where the rg is more rounded the whole way across. so you could be making it worse. but if you have a feel confident, then go for it, just do it by hand and be careful

Hi!
Thx! Yeah, comparing the two I could tell how they were different. It is the "shoulders" I mentioned that are too high for my hands. When I anchor my thumb, it feels much thicker there than on the UV. The front to back thickness is cool, maybe the slightest thinning would feel better. But, I plan to take down the shoulders first. I guess I was more curious if others had done it, and if so, what to be careful of. Such as the cracking mentioned, which I will be wary of. If it is simply taking the time to use sandpaper and hands, no worries then! I just figured if someone found something to help do it right...such as using a radius block instead of freeholding the sandpaper, or whatever. You don't even want to know the rest of the mods being done...lol... Yeah, I loved the UV profile. So I guess it is more of reshaping than anything. Guys have bigger, stronger hands, period. Even my Les Pauls have thin necks, no way I can play the big fatties form the 50's and all. Last edited by nikki-k; 11-11-2007 at 11:21 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

youre going to want to use a hand sander, to avoid damage.
you could maybe use a rasp a little bit, but thats still kinda risky. I'm not sure how much extra wood is in the neck around the trussrod, and im not sure how much you can take off before it weakens the neck substantially |

Yeah, that is what I was most afraid of. I wish I knew if they used the same truss rod placement as the old school UV's. If so, then I should be able to simply take down those shoulders to be close to a UVPWH and be fine. The center of the back is totally cool. I guess it is the curve from the center of the back to each edge that I am talking about. I want it to be more of a "(" instead of a "C" or something...but that looks drastic with those characters! LOL! Maybe from "[" to "(" instead? Round the edges on the "[" and that seems close to it. Sorta like a JEM=7620 profile, and UVPWH= original wizard RG5x0 profile...make sense? (yeah, I prefer the original RG wizard over the wizard 2, JEM, Prestige and USA Custom neck profiles for the same reason; my '74 LPC is actually profiled like the wizard 1, just slightly thicker all around...same profile tho..)

Another thing to take into consideration is that if you go TOO thin on your sanding you could damage the structural integrity of the guitar and might have a tweaked neck on your hands later on down the road.
If you're not familiar with it, take it to a luthier and see if they can re-profile it for you. Also if you can bring them the neck you're comparing it to that might help. Good luck. ![]() ![]() |
