Whats wrong with my emg
so i bought some emg pickups and installed them a while ago. i got them installed and working, well first i got the zakk wylde set 81 and 85, but the 81 has sound but i guess it sounds like it doesnt have enough gain and its really crackily. but i think the reason its messed up is because when i first started to install i used a sautering gun that uses electro magnetic waves or something and then i figured out those can mess up the pickups so i switched to a sautering iron that is pen like. the 85 works perfect but the 81 is messed up some how. so does anyone know if it is ruint for good or if its fixable??? and im almost 100% sure the wiring is correct

Did you install them so they share the same volume/tone pots? If not then the pots are probably to blame, when I first did mine the volume and tone knobs didn't do shit and it would make weird noises occasionally. It could also be the pickup selector switch.
You probably want to take the pickup housings out and switch them around, which shouldn't be hard to do with the quik-connect cables. If the 81 works fine in the 85 position then at least you know the actual pickup isn't screwed up. |

What the hell is an EM soldering gun?
![]() try changin your batteries. Sounds obvious as hell but try it anyway. Check all your wiring, and did you use the supplied 25K pots? |

Yeah, I'd imagine the soldering gun is what messed it up. Never heard of one what uses EM waves, though.

Also make sure the quick-connect is on the right way, it's easy to flip it and put it on backwards.

I've never heard of a soldering gun that uses EMFs or anything. Think about it, if you're working on electronics, an electromagnetic field is the last thing you want around your shit. That said, maybe a wire is shorted out, that would cause crackling and the like.

Maybe you could try talking to EMG customer support and tell them that the 81 was bad when you got it. They're pretty good about responding to questions.
