Deathlef is on a distinguished road
Pick-up height on RG 7420 w/ Dimarzio

Hey guys,

I just installed my two new Pick-ups, namely the Tone Zone 7 (bridge) and the Air Norton 7 (neck).
My problem now is: What is the recommended height for the pick ups? Righ now, they are not really close to the strings (the original PU's were set much higher).

For my TZ 7, I get quite a nice tone. Not too overdriven but it still bites. However, my AN 7 makes some problems. At first, it was very low. It sounded very good for the high strings, but if i played on the low E or B it became quite muddy. So I set it a bit higher. Now it's fine for the low strings, but the high strings are not as clear as before.

Is there something like a standard height? At least tell me the distance between Pick-up and strings on your guitars

Thanks for now,
Deathlef

Well, Jemsite recomends 2-3mm as a good starting point... Myself, I've got my Blazes maybe 3-4mm on my UV- I'd give you a firm measurement, but my guitar's at home and I'm not... FWIW, I've been told the TZ is happiest when it's set a little lower than normal - I never got it as high as 2-3mm, but I can confirm that in the 5mm+ range it was very open and organic.

It was too muddy before on the low strings, but as it went up, it cleared up yet the top strings got muddy? Weird, that's kinda unintuitive.

okay, so I'm 4 days late.

Get the foam strips off the bottom of the original pickups and put them in exactly the same place on the new pickups. Problems solved
