Rio Grande 7 String Humbuckers????

Does anyone in here have any experience with the muy grande humbuckers from Rio Grande for 7 strings? I want to know if anyone can compare them with the Seymour Duncan JB 7? Pros/Cons. How are they for Alternative Metal / Hard rock / Progressive. Stuff like Tool, Korn, A Perfect Circle, Mudvayne etc.

You're not the only one who'd like to know - not that it helps you any, but I've been very curious about these...

Division - American metal that doesn't suck. Much. Even on MySpace, and Soundclick, too.

I have played a 7 string with Rio Grandes for 6 years now. The Muy Grande 7 is a great all-around humbucker- pretty hot, very fat, not very bright. The lows are not too "tight", so if you are a hardcore shredder, I would look for something else. But for the stuff you mentioned, I think it will do great.

The Tallboy 7 I haven't had much use for, since I play 99% of the time with the bridge pickup. I still think it sounds a bit "weak" to my taste. Great for jazzy clean sounds, I suppose. Don't get me wrong - it's been getting great rewiews at Harmony-Central (at least the 6-string version) and might be the Holy Grail for someone...

Rio Grande humbuckers have one great speciality: When split, they sound like real single coils, _not_ like split humbuckers. The luthier who built my guitar said that in his many years of experience he had never heard a humbucker sound as good split as these. With my alder-bodied bolt-in (not bolt-on, mind you) guitar I get great shimmering cleans, kind of tele-like. Very cool.

One downside about them is that they tend to be a bit noisy out of the box. I had a squealing problem, then had the pickups wax potted by a pro, problem solved. I don't think they wax pot them at the factory.

The guitars in the songs at my band's MySpace site are all recorded with the Muy Grande 7, listen to them at MySpace.com - Collarbone - Rock / Metal / Punk - www.myspace.com/collarboneband. In the clean part of the song "Tarantula" you can hear some of the nice single coil tunes I was talking about.

very cool--thanks for the informative post. i love their 7-string single coils, but i haven't taken the plunge on any of their humbuckers yet. maybe the ideal neck humbucker for my 7-string Tele is the Tallboy humbucker....

I think Collarbone said it best, but I'd add that the Muy Grandes have a great low end growl to them. I have one in the bridge position in my KB. They are noisy though! Compared to the JB7 in my blackjack, the Muy Grande has more low end and output, is noisier, and has a threatening growl that I love. It is a beefy pickup. The single coil sounds are great indeed-- also I have a Tallboy in the neck position and it delivers beautiful cleans. I would not put a Tallboy in the bridge position if you want a heavy sound, but for blues and related genres it would probably sound good...

hmmmm, I kinda want a Rio Grande now.

I got this from Harmony Central, it's about the extra outside noise from the Muy Grandes. READ IT V V V

"This is an update to my last review 6/29/00. I had my P.U.'s wax potted to reduce microphonic feedback. I don't know if this is done at Rio Grande, but for whatever reason my Muy Grande had a lot of outside noise. I noticed that they where wrapped with cloth tape which is one way of pickup potting. Now; however, the problem has been solved. I cannot express how great these P.U.'s sound! My Strat now has a wood tone that is brown and full of harmonics. It plays with a touch sensitivity you would expect from a great guitar setup. I have used both Dimarzio and S.D. but they just don't come through anything like these. Just looking at the R.G's you can tell that they are different! QUALITY! BIG! But R.G. Do you guys Wax these things? were mine skipped? It made a world of difference. Please contact Rio Grande before you start melting!! I am not trying to suggest that anyone try this, as I am sure this voided my warranty. And if you don't know how to Pot with wax, DON'T! WAX BURNS!!! There are Co. that will do this for about $10.00 per. If you are looking to buy high quality Pickup's and are seriouse about your tone, You just found it! These things Kick Ass! Thanks again Dave!!"
