Bartolini sevens
I saw on bartolini site that they make pickups for sevens. Has anyone had experience with these? If so which ones and how were they. Also other bartolini experience is useful.

Yeah, I'd be interested too - I've been looking at upgrade options and Bartolini bass pickups seem to have a good reputation

I remember Frank Falbo talking them up a bit over at Jemsite, and that guy is about a reliable a source as I've run into over there... Never played a set myself, but I'm intrigued.

If their 7 string pickups are as good as the sixes I've used in the past, they could be very cool. I had a Bartolini LCHB in a strat back in the '80s, and it was like EMG power with passive warmth. I like their bass PUs, too, so...

I've used them in my main seven for a while now, but it's been apart for a while as well
I used the 492's. They are fairly low output but the clarity and definition of the individual notes is truly awesome. I use an onboard preamp with mine (a Falbo preamp, at that) so I can do pretty much anything I want with them. They're better for soloing I think than straight strumming, but they are awesome pickups. Once I get my guitar back together I can tell you a little more about how they're voiced, but I'd go with Barts everywhere withou a problem. I have one in the neck of my 550 and it's great as well. And, they directly replace Dimarzio's and stock Ibanezes without any hassle at all. Here's a shot of mine in my old body, you can see the on/off for the preamp: http://www.jim777.com/images/face.JPG

Guys you virtually CAN'T be disappointed in a Bartolini. You can get one that's voiced very differently than what you like personally. But that's true of every pickup maker.
The bottom line is this: There's no other pickup I've tried that can match the string-to-string clarity of a Bartolini. The separation of notes is superb. I suppose if you were after a true vintage Zep/Sabbath/Cream sound where all the notes of a chord melt together like brown sugar in hot oatmeal, they'd be wrong for you. But most everyone on this site is after clarity in the low register. The Bartolinis deliver that. I've been friends with Bill and Pat Bartolini for about 10 years. I can always get my "personal stash" but I've been thinking about making them available for resale. Maybe if there's enough interest I'll do it. I just don't want to get into a bunch of install work and stuff like that. For Chunkosaurus' original query, each person will have different preferences, but a loose generalization would be that the active E494-D bridge, powering the V92C-B neck would "blow away" an EMG 81/85 combo (if they made an 85 for 7's) but also have the ability to sound more like a Blaze/PAF combo. There'd be plenty of tone shaping options in between too. The 4D-01/4D-03 combo would "blow away" a Tone Zone-7/Air Norton-7 combination, but also have some crispness the AN lacks, more like the Duncan 59-7. The 492's are a little low on the output, and are best IMO with a preamp, but definitely usable without one, like a vintage PAF output. The E494 has the preamp built in, like EMG's, but the other pickup(s) can pass through it, so you can go with a passive 49xx neck pickup. You can use a preamp with the 4D-0x's for more tone shaping, but it's less necessary. |

Blow away the AN7 ? HMMM....
Interesting. What do they go for on average? 100-150$ per? |
