All of this is true, but if you're talking about the actual ground wire, most often it's soldered to the bridge.

no i know about the bridge wire, that's from the pot casing too. so i just whack a blob of solder on the bottom casing and stick it onto there? okeydokey, ta.

Yeah, that's it. All grounds (brigde, pickups, pots, switch, jack etc) must be connected together too, so it makes sense to ground each bit to the nearest pot and then link the pot casings together.

If soldering to the potentiometer case is problematic (rarely works good for me), you could always solder all the grounds to one washer, then connect the washer to the barrel lug on the output jack.

Here is where that idea comes from:

You have to scuff the pot casing first with a file or wire brush. The idea is to remove some of the corrosion resistant coating to reveal clean metal.

Well it's ok it's a re-wire jobby, old volume pot off an old guitar so it's been done before it seems.
