The aesthetic impact of BLACKOUTS

well the blackouts are well and truly here and as we all know one of the plusses of the things is that they don't require routing as they come in the standard size as well as the size of "the other brand" as they like to call it (that still gives me a chuckle).

So I ask the SS members.... when someone is playing a guitar with EMGs, everyone pretty much knows it just by looking at a guitar...the things are in bass housings FFS so there ain't no mistakes there. With the introduction and possible widespread acceptance of the Blackouts, and their standard housing size, will this spell the end of cool modded guitars routed within an inch of their lives to accept EMGs? Could the blackouts spell the beginning of yet another phase of all pick-ups kinda looking the same (generalising here). Or am I just too drunk?

Discuss.

I hope so in the case of stopping guitarists from having to mod their guitars just for pickups. As far as pickups looking the same, I doubt it, unless they're also based on the EMG archetype. Even Duncan's other actives don't look the same. I don't really mind either way 'cause I really don't mind how they look as long as they sound good.

By the way, does anyone know why active pickups always seem to have covers?

I think you are far too drunk. But so am I, so who cares?

I think they are self-conscious about their appearance or perhaps it is because the pickups are drenched in epoxy resin to help prevent a) people nicking the design and b) microphony.

Who cares? It's what they sound like that matters. I don't care what people are thinking when they look at my guitar. I just want the guy at the back of the room who's facing away and talking to someone to turn around and go "Hey, what was that? That was cool!"

Using specific pickups doesn't make people "not mod" their guitars, it just means they won't have to tear up the finish to appease EMG since they were too stubborn to change their housing! Yes, I also agree you might have been a bit drunk when you made this thread....
