I've got the TZ7 of DOOM!

I just got my RG8427F FE today and I have to say I'm very impressed with the Tone Zone 7.

Why does everyone avoid it like Kerry King avoids the clean channel on his amp?

Maybe it just sounds good in Maple/Mahogany guitars or something. Or maybe I got a broken Tone Zone 7.

i liked the dark sound of the TZ7 that was in my 2027--it had nice mids and a thick high-gain sound. i run the TZ7 in my Dean EVO [mahogany body & set-neck], my homemade neck-thru V7 [maple & maple], my Strat VII, and there will be one in my homemade alder S7.

i think the reason many people don't like it is because most 7-stringers want bright, sharp high-gain tones, and the TZ7 in mahogany isn't sharp enough for them. i bet the maple cap on your 8427, like the one on my LACS RG7, is brightening the tone up some.

Actually, my experience is it DOESN'T sound good in mahogany guitars.

Rather, let me clarify - it sounds like a Les Paul in mahogany guitars. If you like that all-mids-nothing-else sound (and some people do) then it rules. If you don't, then it sucks.

It wouldn't be that bad if you had a couple guitars and one of 'em had a Tone Zone, but it wouldn't be my first choice for my bridge pickup in my only seven.

At last another "lover of the TZ7". LOL,,, I felt like a pariah around here when I ranted about the sound of that pickup! I also use an Air norton7 in the neck great combo!

I hated that thing and would reccomend avoiding it like the fricking plague -- at least in basswood.. I had it in a basswood RG1077XL though. It just sounded too dark and not articulate enough. it'd be cool if it could pull off the sludgey thing a la morbid angel like the Blaze does, but it doesnt.

It was funny, the 1077XL had a new7 stock pickup in the neck, and i was like "Wow, this factory ibanez pickup totally CRUSHES the TZ7 in every aspect!"

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,
Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie,
Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee
Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread
Its branches like a Temple overhead.

i had a 6 string tone zone in my dean vendetta (mahogany body, maple neck) and i thought it was kinda dull, not enough treble, too much bottom end. and not as clear as i wanted.

the x2n i replaced it with pretty much fixed all that tho, haha. way higher output, and alot clearer.

i think the tone zone was better for rock type stuff, where the x2n is alot better for metal.

I hated it as well, just really made everything muddy and lifeless. But different strokes for different folks! Was definately the worst pickup i had in my 2027.

Hmmm... I'm gonna keep fiddling with it first and I might replace it with my DS7...

Would a DS7 in a mahog/maple guitar give me the same sound as Linkin Park's "don't stay"?

(for anyone that hasn't heard that song go to dimarzio.com and it's a sound clip under the DS(6) section)
