Blaze vs. Blaze Custom for death metal

Well, more black metal/thrash, but still with death metal.

I've decided that I either hate my D Activators or they're broken, so I'm looking for a new set. I was going to go with EVo7/AN, but from what I've read the Blaze would be better. But how does a Blaze Custom pair in comparison?

Basically I'm using an RG1527 through an ENGL Blackmore (Marshall cab, gt12-75's). I like a little thump on my low end, but nothing overbearing. A lot of the stuff I do is single note fast picking stuff, a lot of chording work, a lot of power chords obviously, and I do all of the lead work in my band which includes arpeggios and speed runs. I need a pickup that will do better with these characteristics. I do love my mids, so I was thinking that the Custom would be a better choice, but I've also heard several people dislike it.

Any ideas? Sorry, I know this is like my 19th pickup post, hopefully my last.

jlagoon has a spectacular aura about
It really depends on the amp and cabinet that you use, and I am not familiar with your amp.

The Blaze Custom can give you thump, but not a real kicking low-mid thump. The main difference is that when you play a full chord or a power chord, the BC would "sparkle" and the Blaze would be slightly more in the background.

If your amp can compensate the thump and fast response factor in playing Death Metal, and lead work is more important, then go for BC.

I don't know if you've played any ENGLs, but the Blackmore is more mid-voiced of the ENGL line. Hmm this is a tough decision. Does either have better single note definition (lower strings)?

Actually, i'd take the evo7 above the blaze custom, and i'd also take the blaze above the blaze custom.

The BC has a fizz and some slight loss of definition on the low end.

I went through all three in my UV's, and currently use blazes and evo7's

THe evo7 I'd say is a much better bet, as it cuts through nicely in a band mix, AND gives you a very clear, tight low end. To be honest it is for metal the best out of the lot.

and out of the blaze / BC I'd say imho the blaze has a better low end.

Couldnt have said it better. The BC has this crispy high end to it that seems to fizzle in a weird way. I'd go for an Evo 7.. It retains so much definition and its so sharp and harmonic. Perfect for blazing rhythms and leads - where other PUs will get sloppy. Slap a blaze neck in the neck and youre set.

dude, emgs are unparalleled for that metal crunch/rythm, an evo isnt gonna give you a thumpin low end, its more of a mid to high end sound, i'v had a blaze and it was the same situation, crappy low end, great mids and highs, and i think the blaze custom is a higher mid voicing of the original blaze.

I play a 1527 loaded with Blazes & play a mix of Death & Sludgecore & have no problems what so ever, It's tight & fat with a thick full tone & brutal as hell. I do however use a 5150 & boost with a Maxon Od808.

I'm going to agree with James & Ryan, the Evo 7 is the best DiMarzio I've ever played for death metal or any extreme metal, it's not even close. Flawless for blistering riffs and trem picking, with a sinister roar and aggressive sound. Really awesome for leads too. The Blaze would be 2nd best I think.

I keep meaning to try out the Evo, but every time I'm just starting to think I'm getting bored of the Blaze It catches my ear & reminds me why I love the Tone I have & ends up sounding awesome!
