No, I wouldn't ever think of using steel wool on my strings. Sounds kind of crazy. I do use a Kleenex to wipe grime off my strings when they're old but I want to wait at least a few days before changing them.* Naren loves the sound of new strings. |

i wipe my strings with a wash cloth whenever i finish playing. combo'd with the fact i wash my hands before i start playing, it keeps them pretty clean for a while

On the topic of new strings, i dont know how anyone can hate the tone. Thats my favorite part of new strings is the jangly awesomeness that comes from them.
Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high, Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie, Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally. Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread Its branches like a Temple overhead. ~Charles Baudelaire http://www.myspace.com/impurity Brutal Skullfucking Death Metal |

I don't. I don't like bright tones. I prefer milder, duller tones.

My advise would be to find another solution. As long as you're protecting the pickups it's not really bad for anything, but old strings don't intonate properly. The intonation starts to go out and it's not exactly predictable or consistant.
Try a half round string (I know D'Addario makes one) They're almost as mellow as flatwounds but feel a bit more like roundwounds. I don't know about the harmonics, but I'd rather not sacrifice intonation. |

I used to use sandpaper. Never really had any problems with it. But,
strings with that much crap on them NEED to be changed, cleaning them only helps a little, and not for very long. |
