Actually, it doesn't work linearly like that, since your dealing with a cylindrical object. The moon is 1/4 the diameter of Earth, which means it is approximately 1/50th the size of Earth. So, he is right in stating that you could be removing a lot more material than you really think.

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high, Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie, Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally. ever thought of applying something to your new strings to get them to that duller state that you prefer?
I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate. We'll cross the streams. |

Well, I'm going to go against the grain here and pitch an alternative.
Over the years when I've been to lazy to swap the strings on an axe that only gets pulled out occasionally I hit the strings with one of these. Scuff Pads There is no metal in them so they don't get crap all over your pickup pole pieces. Just be sure to treat your finish with lots of respect. I've got to disagree with the others here and say you're unlikely to grind away any significant amount of material. If you do your apt to break a string anyway.......then....problem solved. I've occasionally used this trick long enough that strings started to act weird and give strange over tones on some frets (ie; high E above the 10th), so don't plan on doing any intonation adjustments with them ol' strings. ![]() |

Maybe if you turn the treble down from 10 new strings won't sound as harsh? |
