well, you ideally just want a three way switch, but even with EMG's you should be able to do some fun switching with a bit of thought!
I'd just get a new scratchplate, lose the tone, and replace the tone with a 3 way gibson toggle switch. Very easy and less clutter, and if you don't use the tone knob anyway... |

Yeah I definitely thought of getting a new pickguard from Jeannie's with no tone knob hole, EMG template...but with the cash I'm spending on trying and buying pickups lately, the $50 or so seemed like too much. I always remove the tone knobs, so I used that space in the control cavity for the 9V. There's just a hole in the guard there, but if you saw my pickguard...you'd see that it doesn't matter. I had my UV7BK custom carved (including the guard) into an evil death metal guitar themed around Morbid Angel artwork. So my ham-handed widening of the space for the EMGs, the empty hole where the tone knob used to be...they don't really stand out due to how messed up the guitar looks anyway. If you're curious, check out myspace.com/ikoncustoms. There's a guitar there called "The Slime." Note though that in the pictures it looks more green than black...it's actually a mostly dark black guitar. My avatar here is a pic of the guitar, but it's so small you can't tell. (The "Fleshless" on that myspace page is mine as well)
So yeah, I may go ahead and get a switch like you're suggesting. In this one I really only care about bridge on/neck on. I have another UV (which will not be carved up, ever) with DiMarzios where I do care about different pickup combinations. The Slime UV with EMGs is my brutal death metal blasphemy guitar, no subtlety required (hence the EMGs). Now I wonder if I'll get yelled at for "destroying" a UV. Believe me I thought a lot about it, because it's my favorite guitar. The guy who does the carving wanted the Morbid Angel dudes to see it, the dudes in the band flipped over it. I have some cool pictures of Trey and Tony with the guitar. |
