the clip is very shreddy stuff btw, which is what I was asked to write.
1. FANTASTIC playing. Awesome stuff.

2. The pickups sound real articulate (which is probably a good thing)

But!

3. What were you playing through? I have to admit, the tone sounded real, real sterile and processed, like an old Zoom pedal. It definitely didn't "grab" me, or make me want the pickups. (I'm attributing this to the rig you used, however, and not the pickups. That tone was all the rig.)

Thanks for the update, though!

cheers Yeah, I sort of know what you mean. It's an old digitech pedal with just a dirty sound, no effects to speak of apart from a bit of reverb. I use it through my amp too. I don't know why, but I just like it ! I will be trying to record some more 'organic' sounding stuff by mic'ing up my amp soon (trace elliot combo), so will let you know how that goes.

Dude, whereabout in the UK are you?

CAn i make a completely serious request - that you use your UV through something like a 5150 or a Dual Rectifier - its the tone almost everyone here 'knows' and expects, and since there at least 4 of us who are going to buy these provided we hear some 'real' 7 string action I think think it would be the best promotion for the product.

Awesome clip, by the way.

hey there

I'm in Cheltenham mate, about an hour below Birmingham.

I should make the point that if anyone in the UK wants to drop in and try these things out for themselves, just drop me a line at vibetronic@yahoo.com.

These pickups are fitted in my Jem, just so you're all clear on that. I wouldn't put new pickups in my Universe 'cos it's an old MC and frankly I don't want to mess with it. Well I guess I might if persuaded I stuck a reply on this thread 'cos I'd just finished the demo, and thought a 6-string demo would at least give you guys some indication that q-tuners can be used for shred/rock/metal etc.

If you're thinking of putting Q-tuners in a 7 string, you won't be disappointed. If you imagine what DiMarzio Evolutions sound like in a Jem, then imagine something that's punchier, louder, and loads more clearly defined, then you're getting there. Then imagine that translated to a 7 string and it'd sound awesome. (I think I'm starting to persuade myself to order some for the Universe now ! ) I would love to put some in my LGM, as I don't like the EMGS.

Regarding the sound, just to clarify: like I said, I do most of my recording straight through an effects box into the computer, which gives me the tone I want, and is the same as my amp tone as I stick this box through the amp. I just really like the sound it has, I can't really explain why, but to my ears it doesn't sound processed or whatever. It's a clean, crisp dry distortion that I happen to like. I can completely understand why people might not like it though...different strokes for different folks and all that crap

However, for the next one, I'm mic'ing up the amp and will be using just that. It's a Trace Elliot Speed Twin, and has great clean and distorted sounds. The purpose of this is to get a good clean sound, as the effects box doesn't have that (and neither has any line6, Johnson etc I've tried!). It will also give people the change to hear the pickups through a valve amp.

hope that helps answer a few questions

Ben

I wasn't suggesting you take apart your MC for us, quite the opposite. If you were closer too I would be quite happy to lend you my 7 to try them in.

I wasn't trying to dig at your guitar sound - its all personal taste. I merely suggested the Dual Recto or the 5150 as, regardless f whether people like them or not, almost everyone knows the basic sort of sound and 'feel' you get from these amps and its easier for them to imagine what their rig would sound like with them.

I am very interested in these, and a friend of mine is looking at putting them in his custom guitars.

Any response appreciated!

hey mate, no worries ! I didn't think you were having a dig, I just thought I'd explain what I did and what's coming up, just so it was clear I just meant that hopefully the next demo will indicate a bit more what these sound like through an amp

I'd love to have the 7-string version of these for the Universe, definitely. I would be tempted to take it apart, it's just I like the colour of the pickups in there at the moment

I could lend you my 7420, but you wouldn't have time to take the pickup out before i needed it

i listened to the clip.....the tone you recorded with really sounds very muffled to me....plus, i'm much more interested in hearing some metal riffage than i am in hearing shred type stuff with the kind of backing riffage you used. also, i think the drums are too loud.

hey there. Shred was what was asked for, so shred is what I did Not sure about it being muffled, it's clear as a bell through my headphones/speakers and a lot of the feedback we've had has said how clear it sounds. The tone I used has certainly split opinion though, but I think that would generally be the same whatever I'd used The drums may be a bit loud, but that's just the way I mix them and like them. I'll tone them down a bit in future and see what it sounds like though.

(this isn't me being arsey by the way, I'm just looking at feedback on several forums and trying to respond to it ).
