I'd up the guage from 9's to 10's also, lighter guages don't sustain for very long, not very resonant.

Raising the pickup will help.

The JSX would be one of my top picks for a tube head, short of a Boog 2recto.

funkygmacman will become famous soon enough
If your looking to pick up a new amp, for what it's worth, I'm a big fan of Carvin tube amps. I had a X212, and it broke my heart when I had to sell it. They don't make them anymore, and apparently, there's kind of a cult following of that amp out there, so you might have trouble finding one. However, there are several Carvin X100B heads on eBay right now, which is essentially the same thing without speakers.

Beating a dead horse here, but there's your problem. The Evo7 is a seriosuly powerful pickup, but is also very bright with very tight bass. The Spyder, meanwhile, is VERY high gain and pretty bass-heavy - it's not too hard to push it into mud.
