Seven string players really get shafted when it comes to options and offering more alternatives to seven string players would be a good thing. I honestly believe that if they make the pickup in a standard 7-string sized housing, they would get a lot of guys who want to buy EMGs for the active tone but refuse to alter their guitars. http://www.seymourduncan.com/forum/s...7&postcount=25 |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | A gallant effort guys, hopefully they may take notice, but there's certainly no question you now have their attention. You know they're at least bringing the subject up and discussing it at the weekly R&D meeting. As far as a pickup having the best of both worlds tonality - I think you know which pickup I'm going to say............................................... ..............> (look down there) Bob, you really need to break down and try one. They've just about ruined me on any other pickup now. Seriously. Please be kind to snakes. They can't help it. ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Well said Matt ![]() I doubt this'll get us anywhere even if they do make the Blackouts for 7's, but it's worth a try. The cynical side of me doubts EMG will ever change their pickup size as they've got a locked in market now, and anyone else coming into the active market will just be very tempted to make their pickups the same size. After all, the logical thought is: 7 string players using actives > use EMG's > have EMG sized routes > our pickups need to be that size to compete. What they should be thinking is: 7 string players wanting to use actives > have to use EMG's > don't want to route guitar > untapped market for passive sized 7 string actives. |

For this to be a viable answer for Duncan, they'll have to make BOTH sizes, passive-sized AND EMG sized. Passive sized pickups would appeal to a lot of you, but would alienate/piss off current EMG users, if they really are better (whcih they seem to be). EMG-sized pickups, meanwhile, would appeal to existing active-pickup users, the market they're trying to capture, but would alienate/piss off a lot of you. It's a bleak situation for them either way, but if they're trying to capture the active pickup market, then EMG sized housings it is. If they're willing to put forth the R&D costs to do both, however, they could keep both camps happy, and possibly force EMG to follow suit. The question then becomes, just how many pickups in either format can they really sell? We have 4000 members. How many of them currently use EMG's and are willing to drop $200 on new pickups to try something else, and how many of them currently use passives, but would be willing to drop $200 to try actives if they didn't have to route? It becomes a simple game of math at this point, and I can't pretend to know what the break-even point is or if it's within reach, even when you factor in things like brand good-will and potential cross-sells based on favorable first-time Duncan experiences. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I posted to hopefully they'll listen. Here's some advice I was on the original Duncan forum when the users were trying to convince Duncan to make the Custom 5 a model in their line. Well it took months of prodding and begging to get Duncan to put a different magnet in a pickup they we're already winding for two different pickups( SH-5 and SH-11). So Duncan could be convinced to make standard sized actives. But it's going to take a hell of an effort. |
