Your ideal 7-string pickup characteristics

i just got off the phone with Frank Troccoli (Joe Barden's new business partner) at Joe Barden Engineering, and he asked me to help them out with something.

I'm looking for a 7-string pickup that sounds as close as possible to the Barden pickups in a couple of my 6-strings, so of course it made sense to get in touch with the source of the original. Frank said that it's something that they've talked about, but haven't started actually working on yet, and that it would be helpful for me, as a metal player who likes their pickups (making me a relatively atypical Barden player), to help them figure out what would be desirable attributes for pickups for a metal guitarist....for 7-string and 6-string designs.

i have some thoughts of my own, but seeing as this is basically the largest congregation of 7-string enthusiasts out there, this is probably a good way to get feedback for this.

Simple:

Aggressive top end, without being harsh.
A good, but less aggressive mid presence, without being too scooped.
Full, warm low end, without being too boomy or woofy.

Having said that, I use a JB, which has just a touch more mid than you'd get form that comment. However, I think a pickup that hit this range would work well for a lot of 7 string types...

Division - American metal that doesn't suck. Much. Even on MySpace, and Soundclick, too.

that's kinda along the lines i was thinking of. i'll try to post a clip later of my Barden-equipped guitars compared to a couple others to give people an idea of what they sound like.

SAME HERE, BUT TIGHTER, PERCUSSIVE LOW END THAT MELDS THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS OF BEING WARM BUT NOT MUDDY OR SPONGY.

NECK WISE, A CROSS BETWEEN AN AIR NORTON & A PAF PRO, CREAMY IN THE BUTTERY TRADITION OF THE PAF, BUT WITH SOME OF THE QUACK & UPPER MID CLARITY OF THE AIR NORTON, & WELL BALANCED TO GO WITH THE BRIDGE P/U AS FAR AS OUTPUT GOES. I LIKE THE OUTPUT LEVEL TO BE HOT ENOUGH TO PUSH THE AMP, BUT NOT X2N TERRITORY EITHER TO WHERE CLARITY IS LOST.

WHEN USING THE JPM WIRING CONFIG TO SPLIT THE INNER COILS ON THE CENTER POSITION, MOST NOTABLY ON A CLEAN SETTING LIKE A ROLAND JC120 OR A FENDER SUPER TWIN WITH ALL DISTORTION CHARACTERISTICS REMOVED (THINK ROBERT PLANT'S BIG LOG OR CHRIS ISSAK'S WICKED GAME), OR LIKE THE TELE CHARACTERISTICS (CENTER POSITION) THAT ALMOST PRODUCE AN ACOUSTIC QUALITY, NEARLY A FLAT EQ SPECTRUM, QUITE SIMILAR TO HOW THE GUITAR SOUNDS UNPLUGGED, IN ITS NATURAL RESONANT CHARACTER.

So basically, "lots of this, but not TOO much..."

Hell, I'd be curios to see any Barden 7 in producton. didn't Danny Gatton use his stuff?

I would fall all over myself if Joe would build a 7-string version of his Two Tone, but without that Tele "spank" up top.

Probably a Lundgren M7 with more midrange, and a little less bass. Infact, I might actually get in contact with Johan again and see if he'd custom make me one.

Other than that, I think the Evo7 sounds pretty perfect, and doesn't cost 200 Euro.

My perfect pickup would be medium-hot output, clear tight bass with enough mid punch to make it chucky and still cut through with sweet top end.

Single coil would be a bell like bottom end and overall a clear present tone that does not get shrill.

i'm sure if a 7-string HB can be done, a Two/Tone version can be made from it....as far as the actual construction goes, it's a pretty simple change.
