saffron shrimp is a jewel in the rough
S7420 + Dimarzio's

Ok, so i bought a blaze bridge and blaze neck for my S7420 and I went to put them in, but there much taller than the stocks. Even with no foam underneath, the neck pickup will touch the strings.

I know some of you have dimarzio's in your S what did you do to get them in, shim the neck?

also Dimarzio says the AN7,TZ7 and PAF7 are shorter than the Evo,BC,D-Sonic,etc.

I dont really want to shim the neck because it will need a very ample shim in order to fit and I'm not sure if I want to route underneath because there already isnt that much wood there.

So my question is has anyone had this problem before using the dimarzio's with the fiberglass base plates?

You don't need to shim the neck to the total amount of the extra space you need - rather, you just need to shim it enough to change the neck angle. Really ghetto picture to follow in a few seconds.

Ok, here you go... The idea is to build neck ANGLE, not neck height.

Edit - I assume yours is the blue S7420.

I'm still trying to figure this out, as I had no problem fitting my AN7/DS7 in mine. are you sure the pickup tabs aren't hanging up or anything? I had to do some wiggling before I got the tabs to fit into the slots and everything dropped into place. I didn't have to route anything or shim the neck...

Nice illustration, Drew! No, really, that's awesome.

I've thought about replacing my bridge pickup in my S 7420 many times so I may want to know some of this too.

Guys I had DiMarzios in my S7420FM, you don't need to shim the neck, hah. It'll fit, you just might need to do a little work in the cavity.

Nick, my experience has been every single Ibanez I've ever set up plays better after a neck shim. They come out of the factory with very little neck angle, and generally increasing it a touch and raising the bridge gives you better pullback.

Either way, sticking a folded up peice of business card in the very back of the neck pocket is WAY less invasive than taking a dremel to your pickup routes...

i wouldnt do that, sounds like ghetto fix if you ask me, besides, shimming might mess up your screw holes , not going in straight and all and then mess up the threading of the holes, if you showed us some pics i'm sure we could all reccomend something better

Uh, people have been shimming bolt-neck guitars for 50 years. It's hardly "ghetto". Some '80s guitars, like my Jackson Dinky, actually have an angled neck pocket for the top-mount Floyds, but I've shimmed plenty of others. D's right on the mark - it'll cure his problem and give him better playability, too.

Division - American metal that doesn't suck. Much. Even on MySpace, and Soundclick, too.

USA Fenders come from the factory shimmed. It is a standard procedure for adjusting the neck angle on a bolt-on guitar.
