Do output and tightness correlate?

I often find that I prefer the distorted rhythm sound of my 7321 with Evo-7 when i've rolled back the volume by about 20%.

Does that mean a lower output pickup would be better for me?

I am still thinking about getting either a bareknuckle Nailbomb or a Lundgren M-7, because the Evo sounds a little harsh to my ears, I still can't get palm mutes to sound aggressive enough while at the same time having "nice" sounding open powerchords, especially on the low A. By nice I mean that one can easily make out the actual notes played, although the distortion is saturated. At the moment it pretty much sounds like a train wreck.

The more I read, the more lost I feel, and I seriously can't afford to buy both and then compare.

Try backing the EVO away from the strings a little. I had my X2N up really high until just recently and I had the same problems as you. Now I have it backed WAY off from the strings and it's tight and clear as could be. The EVO isn't as high output so you shouldn't have to back it off as much to get the same effect. Hope this helps!

The Evo7 isn't really made for rhythm, just searing, face peeling leads. It's very mid-heavy, so it's easy for it to sound harsh. I think the Blaze Custom (similar sound, but warmer and less harsh) is a better pickup for rhythm playing. A Nailbomb or M7 would probably be a much better metal pickup than any DiMarzio, though.

The BC is what I had in it before (see my reviews in the Sticky thread), and the Evo has so much more attack and tightness, which in my book is the most important thing for rhythm.

All I want is a nice "click" when I palm mute, with a crunchy, growly sound to it and good sounding, aggressive open powerchords.

I can have one thing or the other at the moment, but I still can't get both to sound "right".

depends where you put the evolution. i have it in mahogany neck-thru guitar, and the rythem palm muted drills are tight like hell, selective sound, and strong fast attack.
you can check 2 tests i did while a go: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page...?bandID=676537

It's tight as hell in basswood, too. I'm happy with the way palm mutes sound with the evo, but open chords are harsh and noisy.

Those clips don't sound too bad. I've heard some good rhythm tones that came from Evos, but it just seems that while leads just scream from the thing effortlessly, thick rhythm tracks require a bit more work than with other pickups that are better suited for rhythm tones. Then again, I tend to prefer warm, round sounding pickups with just a bit of a modern edge, so maybe it's partially a matter of personal taste. I'd probably like it more in mahogany than basswood, though.

ofcourse. its bright pup , and mahogany is dark sound wood. the same would be if you try ash with invader . about the demos, they were recorded 1 track left 1 right, with behringer vamp-pro
