Locking tuners?

I was wondering if anyone on here uses locking tuners with your floating bridge instead of a locking nut, and if so does it work better?

Do you know my name?
Do you know my NUMBER?

My EBMM JP7 has a floating trem and locking Schaller tuners, and i think it works great. The key is to have a properly cut graphite or GraphTech nut so the strings don't bind there. Personally, i prefer it to a locking nut, as i HATE having to dig out tools when i need to change a string.

I don't know if I'd want a Floyd Rose with locking tuners instead of a locking nut. But with a good two point trmolo like a Wilkinson, Hipshot or the one on the Petrucci model, locking tuners with a well cut graphite nut, like Darren said, will keep you in tune. Now if you want to do all sorts of Steve Vai divebombs and pull ups then get a Floyd with a locking nut. If you're more subtle in your trem use the other options are fine.

Cool, I was thinking about it just because I hate stretching my strings, and also for what you mentioned about the tools. Where would you recommend I get a new nut for it?

Stretching your strings is pretty much inevitable anyways, no matter what type of bridge setup you're using.

But, as far as locking tuners & a Floyd go, play any of the Carvins with that setup, they play fine, & I believe there's a tad bit more sustain with this method as opposed to the locking nut. The key to success in this is as mentioned above, a well carved nut ala graph tech, etc... & a straight string path.

My TFS6 has an inverted inline headstock with a steep side angle ala Jackson with a locking nut. Obviously, this would never work well with locking tuners & no nut. For this reason, I've re-designed the headstock to accomplish the latter option.

IE:
The Current TFS6 Headstock with Floyd Locking Nut.

& the Newly Revised TFS6 & TFS7 Headstock with locking tuners & a trem nut.

It's exactly as Darren, Eric and Tony said. Locking heads and a properly cut Graphtech nut is a very reliable combination, providing the string angles over the nut aren't too extreme. If you want to go nuts like Vai you really need a locking nut though.
Different string brands have different stretch characteristics, for example D'Addarios need far more stretching than Ernie Balls.
